I have! Obviously it can get hung up. Don't skimp on the line used to secure it. Recommend a high load bearing braided synthetic rope 5/16 in diameter.

would this work on spent brass from a 9mm??

Not quite sure why this matters but the actual dimensions of mine are 5' x 2' x 1.5". This magnet is strong enough to lift an outboard motor! (Not quite, but you'll definitely know where it is.)
