Lots of meat; Short on milk for “babes” like me (metaphorically speaking)
Love the Salatin books... well worth reading. That said, though this one is a bit heavier on specifics than some of his others, I still found myself wishing for more detail... that and a few suggestions for the very small scale homesteader more interested in feeding the family than in professional farming. Like so many books written by experts, I have found that what I really needed was a “for dummies” book... and there doesn’t seem to be such a thing out there, at least not for those of us interested in the more natural approach to animal husbandry.

Excellent resource for the Grazier!
I have learned a considerable amount from this book. I appreciate how Salatin provides references for those wishing to dig deeper into the subject matter. I only wish someone would create a similar work for the Rocky Mountain West where conditions are substantially different and grass cured on the stem is considered a "good thing."Salatin's upbeat attitude and rare insights are a breath of fresh air in the industry.

beter than i thought
Based on some of the reviews, i thought this book would be a disappointment. Instead i enjoyed reading this book, but most importantly i learnt a thing or two.I find conventional grain fed beef farming foreign coming from New Zealand. My own cows and 99% of farmers in New Zealand practice pasture based beef. The one thing i strongly disagreed on was Salatins recommendation on slow cooking pastured beef steaks. They are best fried or BBQ'd medium rare. Pastured beef is not tough if fried corectly. Slow cooking should be reserved for the tougher cuts such as topside.

it's a joy to read
As with all other salatin books, it's a joy to read. What I really like about this book is that it doesn't go through useless information about the breeds and technical details of the cattle anatomy like every other cattle raising book. This is a good read if you are going to raise pasture based cattle and it's a proven system. I've been doing it for the past two years with great results. Omitting the spelling errors and goofs, this is a bible that every new cattle man should own.

Invaluable Resources
Salatin provides useful information and tips in easy-to-understand language that even a novice beef rancher (such as myself) can understand. He also discusses topics related to aspects of raising grass-fed beef that I had not even considered but now understand are important. This book is not only informative--it is encouraging!

Philosophy and Process
The mixture of philosophy (based on personal and immutable values) and process (based on actual experience) makes for a highly educational and enjoyable read. Mr. Saladin is the real deal.

Motivational farming business manual!
More than a book about farming, this is excellent reading about a family refusing to throw the towel on their farming in business and its breakthrough towards new and better ways of farming.
