Mine works fine, good reception
Need to shut unit off completely to conserve batteries, only leave on standby when there is the threat of severe weather, otherwise buy the acceptable ac adapter for it. Mine works fine,good reception, 50 mile range is true with the small rubber antenna, and I will only leave on standby if they are calling for winter storms or severe weather, I love it, but programming the The S.A.M.E codes could be a pain, it takes awhile.

UPDATE 4/30/17 NOW TOTALLY USELESS! Kills batteries quickly!
UPDATE 4/30/17 NOW TOTALLY USELESS! In the last six weeks we've had EF-3 and EF-4 tornadoes within thirty miles of our home, so when the weather service announced three days in a row with each day having at least TWO different parts of each day expected to have an 80% to 100% chance of severe weather I decided it was time to put in another fresh set of AAA's. Instead I only see a single 0 (zero) on the display and I can't get the piece of junk to even tell me the current time!Since the warranty is long gone, now I will be looking for a replacement from a DIFFERENT brand still in business with hopefully better quality control! More later if warranted.It was harder to get it to program in the SAME codes I wanted without accidentally putting them as alternates. It gives the option of TEN different SAME codes (good for people that travel to the same places, I guess?) but it is easy to put it on the wrong one. Accidentally left it on in standby when I programmed it, killed a new set of batteries in less than two days! About all it's good for is as a backup to my wired weather radio. I'd hoped it wouldn't use batteries so quickly to I could add it as a bedroom radio during heavy weather but I will still have to rely on our main household radio.
