The First Strawberries (Picture Puffins)

There is nothing I disliked. Beautiful artwork. Several pages with just pictures. The students really enjoyed the pics and story.

Not what I expected by looking at the cover. It is about a couple fighting and how strawberries brought them back together. I really enjoyed the story. Definitely a good lesson to teach and the kids may need to hear it over and over to really grasp the point. I believe this will be a story they will look for in the future that they read as a youngster. I got the book from the free library program then bought it on Amazon as a baby shower gift.

I ordered this book sight-unseen as gifts for children in my life because other books by the author were chosen for our community reading program. The story moved me to tears. It is beautiful in the simplicity in which it touches on the expectations we place on human relationships and the beauty of reconcilliation. The illustrations are wonderful, too. I plan to give this as a gift going forward to anyone I know getting married!

Anger, forgiveness and sweet strawberries - what do they have in common? They are all elements of the wonderful Cherokee story retold by Joseph Bruchac. I love his books! This story of friendship and respect is not lost on the young nor the old who read or hear it. Anna Vojtech's illustrations are beautiful and dreamy and fit beautifully with the words. I think it is a great springboard for explaining to children the concepts of quarreling and reconciliation in relationships.

This is a nice story for children who are studying the Cherokee people. As a long-time teacher of literature, I am always inclined to encourage children to link what they are reading with other literature in their experience."The First Strawberries" is a lovely story of the first two people created by the Supreme Being "Yowa" from the Cherokee heritage. Not only is it a very fitting story of how these two come to cherish one another, but it is also very nice for comparison with the Biblical account of the first two people created by God. A child as young as second grade can easily make the connection. This little story embodies what makes for good children's literature: a well written story with a moral, but without a didactic approach. It allows the child to discern for himself with what he brings to the experience.

This is a Cherokee Indian book. It was okay, it almost the right style but the students did not enjoy it as much as some of the others. It was also to close to Adam and Eve and anything like that can cause some problems in the classroom.

Beautiful book with delicious illustrations and good point. It may be comforting to children who do hear their parents argue

Again, one of my family's FAVORITE BOOKs. The values and life lessons taught are relatable, rather than some 'princess in a far off land, bla bla bla'.... This is a book about knowing when to stand up for yourself, when to reach out and apologize for your actions, and when to FORGIVE and move on again. Perfect book. Plus the illustrations are superb.

This is a story of conflict and conflict resolution, from an indigenous myth perspective. The husband is angry, the wife leaves, the husband is remorseful and follows after to apologize but can't catch up so the sun throws up berry bushes to slow the wife's progress. However, she is able to resist all until she finds strawberry, which are so delicious she stops to gather them. Her first thoughts are that her husband would like these so she start to pick them which allows her husband time to catch up. He apologizes and they make up.It's a touching story that can teach young people that even if you have an argument, the rift can be healed - especially if you care for someone. In addition, the artwork is wonderful.

I loved the book, and the story. I love all things involving strawberries. So another great choice for my collection.
