CompTIA Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals - Standalone Book

Good information overall. Bad value for your money.
I have passed my Security+ in December and i have found that this book goes way more in-depth on the topics than the exam itself, which is amazing. It is better you overprepare rather than underprepare. If you have the extra money to spare for this book, by all means, go ahead. Now to the bad part, the price of it. The book has great formatting and it the information in it is described in terms simple enough for a very beginner to understand, however this book is absolutely littered with typos and clerical mistakes. It is completely fine to have those in a book, but not in almost every single paragraph. From what i see, it gets worse as the chapters go. It is unacceptable for this kind of price to have so many trivial mistakes of that kind. The book has to be proofread and reprinted for sure. There are books out there that give you 1 for 1 information and are a third or less price. They also don't have as many clerical errors in them. If this book was simply less than $100 and was reprinted to correct the mistakes, it would simply be the best value for your money on the market, but it is not, as it stand right now.

It's a fine book
It's a CompTIA textbook and it reads like a textbook. There seems to be plenty of information. More than enough for the Security+ cert, I'd imagine. If only my instructor that had us purchase this for a college class actually used it as material or even a guide. Really, I just don't know what college is for anymore when everything is such a high percentage DIY endeavor anyway.Pro tip: skip taking any cert classes unless you're getting a real degree (A.S, B.S., etc). "Obtain the materials", read them, maybe take some practice quizes online, and then just take the proctored exams.

Updates are Lacking
This book was required reading for the CIT 270 course at BYUI. In the academic setting, it works well because it's verbose and covers a lot of contextual details in support of the main concepts. which is great for students who have no professional experience with these principles prior to taking the class. If you're looking for a book that focuses on certification, this may not be be the book for you. The additional material may be a distraction when it comes making sure you're focused on what comprises the certification exam. The content itself appears to be updated, but at least some of the supplemental material has not been updated in quite some time. For example, we were required to do the "Hands-on" exercises for each chapter and many are no longer relevant or even possible to do today. That, in my opinion, reduces the value-add that I'm guessing justifies the higher price tag when compared to other offerings in the space, so be aware.

Very helpful
I bought this book because the pathways advisor said it would be a good idea to get my books prior to class starting. So, I did, and I only opened it a couple times when my internet was down for a short period of time. Everything in the book is in the course material you are provided once you sign up for class. So, if you are getting this book for school, I would wait till a few days after you start to make sure you are not paying twice for the exact same things as I did. If you are getting this book outside of school and are just curious it is worth it.

The information detail with pictures
Its exactly what I needed for my class. I was using the online version of the book with highlighting, but it doesn't compare to an actual book that you can physically mark. In preparation to take the COMPTIA tests its worth the price with all the references, diaphragms, explanations, definitions at your finger tips to go back in and reference. If this it the field you are certain of, I recommended getting this text to keep on hand, highly informative.

Great book, great price.
The book's format is really cool; it combines information with examples and suggested projects, to really get a handle on the topic each chapter addresses. The writing is not your typical textbook-style droning on about whatever. It's upbeat and engaging punctuating its message with real world examples. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to study network security technology.

This book is a great read for anyone new to Network Security
I am currently taking a college class that requires the use of this text book. I have got to say that this book is very insightful. I am not an IT Security Major but I am really enjoying the information in this book! The information is well structured and they provide many recent scenarios to help illustrate why securing data is important.

If you need it for classes, get it.
Honestly can't give this book a really good or bad review. The price was a bit high, but the knowledge from it was useful. Like msot technology books, it doesn't take long for it to be outdated.
