I was really surprised at how smooth these are - you almost can't tell from the rollerball ones. The one that I have, does smudge up, but no worse than any other pen refill.

I love my retro pens. I always carry a reto pen and a moleskine in my pocket. Old school. I know I could use my iPhone's notes... but I like to write things down.
