Old light fixture was a boob light which happened to be hiding an oversized hole in the ceiling. In a dining area no less. Repairing with a medallion to put in a more appropriate fixture is the far simpler solution vs having to do drywall work. Medallion is made of a rigid and dense foam material. Comes primed so will need to be painted. Surface had a few rough spots but a light sanding took care of that. I opted to use some Gloss spray paint. Will make keeping clean easier over time vs latex. Adhere it with construction adhesive. Center hole is 4-in, would have preferred it be a little smaller. Typical crossbar mounting plate is also 4-in and for many installs you would want the plate mounted to the outside surface. Not a big deal but does make mounting the fixture a bit more figity. Longer 8-32 screws may also be necessary. If fixture mounts with the threaded tube rod then probably less of an issue.

These are good when upgrading old recessed cans to smaller modern fixtures. You can leave the old can in the ceiling use these to cover the gap.

Works perfectly for what we needed it for.
