Great Product

Lowered rating from 5 to 3 stars only because of big increase in the price since my last purchase and found much less expensive AC elsewhere. Purchased 5 pounds in June 2018 for total delivered price of $79.92. Checked today to see about reordering 5 pounds and the price is now $20.00 higher. This product did arrive in a box and not a tub. I used it several times having to very thoroughly wash it in the media bag each time. Lots of fine particles and dust in the product. Because of the large price increase and fact that this product needs a lot of washing before being used, I'm going to search for a more competitive price with another supplier and hopefully it will also contain less fines. Update: Just placed an order on eBay for 20 pounds of AC including two media bags for $32.54 delivered. Positive reviews on it and worth trying in my opinion. Happy this supplier jacked up the price now because I would have otherwise just reordered. Original review: Product worked great. Koi pond around 500 gallons and couldn't clear up brownish colored water from tannins. Nothing was working including 10-15% water changes. Read about using a few pounds of this in a media (mesh) bag to clear up the water. Added around 5 lbs and WASHED the media bag with the garden hose until no black was coming out of it. Then placed the media bag in my skimmer while temporarily removing the filter and later just moved it to where the pond water would run through it before going over one of the waterfalls. Could see the bottom of the pond and koi clearly by next morning. If using medicine to treat koi, be aware that activated carbon reportedly removes it from your pond.

I really have to wonder if this company changed their product since some of those 5 star reviews? This was very disappointing. The price was fine for what is advertised as "5 Gallons" of "large granules". The problem is, they don't give you 5 gallons (see pic) and these aren't large granules, they are very fine. You will want to use extra fine bags for this. Even in an extra fine bag, I had tiny particles leaking out of it. Funny think is, the lid was not sealed at all and almost fell off when I opened the box that this was shipped in. It was almost like it had been opened and maybe someone took a bunch of the product out and then put it back into inventory? This is also the dustiest activated carbon that I have ever bought. You are going to want to rinse this really well. I have been in the aquarium hobby for a long time and this is the most disappointing activated carbon that I have bought.

Didn’t do a thing for my pond. Gave it a little extra time because I have a very large pond, but it’s just as green and murky as it was before I used this charcoal.
