Stickers Galore!
This is a fairly typical HG build and is decently fun working on the main body. The detail on the head and face is very nice thanks to the parts breakdown. Articulation is good, making dynamic poses easy to achieve. This kit does not use polycaps— it relies on friction to make its joints work. Then you get to the backpack and the wings, and it’s a lot of foil sticker work. All those white lines on the wings are stickers. What’s worse is that the stickers are meant to fold over the sides and I can already see a couple wanting to peel up at the edges. Ugh, so much work and this kit is not going to age well. The heavy use of stickers makes this actually similar to the SD version.Bandai continues to be hit or miss with including some kind of base/ stand for kits that really need it. Like the Freedom and Strike Freedom, the Rising Freedom is very back-heavy. Bandai knows this— in the instructions, the first step they show after attaching the backpack is mounting the MS to a base. You’ll have to provide your own. Bandai has provided bases in other kits, why not this one? The Rising Freedom can transform into Mobile Armor mode, but you may as well forget about it without a base, as the MA form won’t sit flat.By the way, the MA form is easy to transform into and only requires attaching one extra piece to make it complete. You don’t even have to take anything apart— the shield and gun are the only parts that get removed and reattached to the extra part.Speaking of the gun, it also relies heavily on stickers, which is weird, because it seems like some of the blue sections could have just as easily been made as separate pieces and attached. But once again, it’s stickers. Oh well.None of these issues are insurmountable. If you intend to paint the kit, the stickers become a non-issue. And any Action Base will eliminate the hassle of being back-heavy. But this review is based on what you get in the box without having to buy additional stuff (paint and base) for a satisfying display piece. It’s a little bit of a shame— after years of waiting, we finally get some new Seed designs and HGCE kits, with the Rising Freedom turning out to be slightly disappointing. Here’s hoping for a better outcome on the other new kits…
