Wainwright's Remote Lakeland [DVD]

Eric Robson is the Man who famously accompanied the great A.W. on some of his televised walks and here in deference to the great man he walks the outer rim of Lakeland.The series is a bit disjointed but believable he gets very wet when it rains and his faithful dog trots along at his side.I would like to have spent a little more time on each days walk though say 30 minutes instead of about 15.Worth a watch for the scenery and that is cracking.

Eric makes this a really informative and enjoyable walk to watch. Helpfully broken down into manageable daily walks that you could do as one-off's using the outlying fells Wainwright guide.

Eric Robson does it again with this superbly filmed and extremely well presented video. The scenery is obviously the main attraction but Robson is a fantastic broadcaster and terribly underused by UK television. You will find yourself enthralled from beginning to end. A very cathartic experience in an increasingly hectic and self important world.

This magnificent 14-day walk serves as a companion piece to another great Striding Edge video "The Wainwright Memorial Walk." While the latter DVD covers the more highly traveled central fells, "Remote Lakeland" covers the outer rim of the region, where (as both Eric Robson and Alfred Wainwright note) one is less likely to run into the dreaded "coach parties" and "tourist honeypots." Covering 190 miles and 39,000 feet of ascent, Robson begins and ends at Penrith, traveling counter-clockwise through Scales, Hesket Newmarket, Loweswater, Nether Wasdale, Boot, High Newton, Staveley, and Bampton, moving through some of the fells where the ancient Romans built their mountain high road. Along the way, Robson recounts lots of local lore and "carefully chosen anecdotes," such as the coffin-carrying pack horse that bolted with its cargo and was never seen or heard again (maybe). The changing weather is much in evidence: on Day 4, Robson and his crew are brought to a stop by a torrential downpour; days later they navigate their way through snow on Harter Fell. (The walk takes place in autumn, allowing for the more dramatic play on light on the stunning landscapes.) Robson encounters such curiosities as a stone circle that even Wainright thought was millenia old, but was later discovered to have been a fake, constructed in the 1920s. He also stops to pay tribute to the village of Mardale Green, permanently submerged in 1935 when the Manchester Corporation built a dam to supply water for the Haweswater Reservoir. There's a nice touch at the end of the journey when the individuals on Robson's crew trudge back to Penrith as their names appear in the closing credits.
