Review: Culturize continues to guide and challenge my building level leadership and our team's approach to professional self-efficacy. - Twitter has revolutionized the way we create and sustain PLC groups in the educational field, as a 21 year veteran I have come to use Twitter as a way to find and access new literature to sustain my own professional growth. In recent months I have started to become disenfranchised with the amount of Twit Lit (152 character one-liners with only slightly more actionable information) that has characterized my personal feed. Then I came across Culturize by Jimmy Casas. I ordered Mr. Casas book based on a recommendation I received during one of my Twitter chats. While initially hesitant, I soon found that Mr. Casas has managed to place my primary concerns and challenges as a building level leader into a reader-friendly book with actionable steps to create a positive culture in our building. He does not shy away from difficult topics and provides a student-focused approach to addressing daily challenges from both administrator and teacher perspectives. Kudos Mr. Casas! Your book continues to guide and challenge my building level leadership and our team's approach to professional self-efficacy.

The Reminder I Needed
Reading this book as a teacher has brought me back to the principles that pulled me into teaching from the beginning. I admit that the professional struggles I have faced in my career have left me jaded at times, but this book serves as the perfect reminder of the impact that educators can have on their kids and their colleagues. I read this book as part of a study with my colleagues, and the discussion prompted by this book led us to some incredible conversation and reinvestment in one another and our school. A wonderful book overall that I cannot recommend enough!

Expect excellence, carry the banner, and be a merchant of hope...
"Press pause and ask yourself what the situation requires..." this simple but insightful example of Jimmy's advice as an educational leader comes through in this beautifully written book about how to Culturize your school. Throughout his book, Jimmy tells stories of how to reach those who seem to be unreachable. The Culture Builder activities found at the end of each chapter promote thought and will, no doubt, bring about lots of valuable discussion as this book makes it's way into schools. In Jimmy's words, expect excellence, carry the banner, and be a merchant of hope because we cannot allow average to become our standard. This has been one of the best books I have read in a long time...it pairs nicely with the books Teach Like a Pirate and Lead Like a Pirate. Well done!

Tired of accepting average??
Simply put, this is a wonderful book for those who have chosen to be educators. Early on in the first chapter the question, “Where does average exist in your organization?” is posed and the rest of the book is spent talking about how we cannot accept average in our schools and must do everything within our power to root it out. Jimmy makes a his case based on four well-written and engaging core principles. Each of the chapter includes Jimmy discussing not only his experiences in education but vignettes from others who offer their specific experiences. This is a book that can and should be read by classroom teachers, principals, superintendents, school boards...heck, anyone who is in the business of educating kids! Culturize is a reminder of why we do what we do! Thanks Jimmy for the great read.

OK
This book gives off the feeling of everything being peachy keen in the teaching profession. It talks about things in a best case scenario, but doesn't really offer any solid insights as to how to teach in the real world as opposed to the Disney-fied version of teaching. The author also feels pretty awesome about himself and all of his accomplishments and wants you to feel that way about him as well. Not life-changing. Just middle road. Common sense will get you as far as this book will.

If you have read Kids these days by Dr. Jody Carrington, you will also want to pick up this book. I found this book to have great ideas to implement into a school or classroom. From principal to custodian everyone in a school community is a leader. I enjoyed the refelctive questions at the end of each chapter. I would recommend this book to any teacher administrator and school division employee.
