Cutters won't cut on light cuts
Junk the cutter couldn't make light or even any cuts through mild steel spend your money on a better set

Did not work well for cutting steel
I was able to cut 2, 20 tooth gears in 1215 carbon steel, there is some noticeable wear on the cutter but it still cuts. Got about 30 teeth through a 40 tooth gear in 4140 alloy steel and the cutter is trashed. I'm sure they would work fine in aluminum or plastic.

What I received was made of plastic.
Not suitable for any machine work.

A nice set of gear cutters
This is a good selection of gear cutters and an arbor which can also be used with slitting saws. It appears to be of decent quality and if used correctly should last a decent amount of time. A real asset to any machinist with a milling machine and can be used to make a wide variety of gears.

I only had time for some quick measuring so I'll keep the error margain in favor of the product until I can get these on the surface plate. The first thing I did was see how the gear cutters fit on the arbor. They go on loose, the bore and keyway fit has excessive play both axially and radially. There is a difference of atleast 0.003" between the gear cutter bores and the arbor. That's being kind. The gear cutters also appear to have bores that aren't perfectly round, the quick checks i did showed over a 0.0015" difference depending on where I measured. I suspect this is from having oversized bores compared to the keyway cutting arbor, these were likely stacked on the arbor the keys were cut in a large number of gear cutters all at once. The bores also may not be true to the cutting edges based on how much they would rock on the arbor, They could rock further one way than the other, this was just a visual check but definitely a concern if you can see a difference. Only the sides, bore and cutting edge face was ground after heat treating, the cutting edge profile was left as is. My concern is the profile of the gear cutting teeth aren't true the surfaces ground bore and sides after heat treating. Common sense tells me they won't be. I'll post this when I find time to measure them on the surface plate As it is the R8 collet arbor is useless unless you don't mind 0.003" to 0.005" of run out. I have anothet arbor that may work if the cutters can be salvaged but that's an expensive thing to simply overlook. I'm thinking I should just return them but I am going to check them over properly before I make a final decision. I will update this.... .

Nice starter kit for gear cutting, but it's a little pricey considering it's an import kit. Not sure what the other review is about - most definitely made of plastic. All steel parts.
