Buy Hardcover or Paperback, not the Kindle versio
First—DO NOT buy the kindle version. Hilarious story. I was introduced to the hardcover version when visiting grandchildren. So, I ordered the Kindle version because I wanted to read it to my other grandchildren. I prefer Kindle as I can adjust the font to accommodate a retinal problem. Also a little cheaper than print versions. Big mistake in this instance. Whoever transferred the electronic text to Kindle format set a hard font and graphics format. Big no-no. Because the formatting won’t adjust to the customer, the book isn’t readable. And the very clever, well-done illustrations in the print version is stretched and distorted. Often, two pages are jammed together, displaying four at once or text is overwritten by illustrations. I tried allowing my kindle app (on an iPad) to use the book’s built-in formatting. Didn’t work. Bottom line: print version is delightful and entertains regardless of age. The Kindle version is unreadable.

Unusual Book Design combines Claymation and Illustrations
Mac Barnett is a wonderfully creative author. My granddaughter, age 6, loved this book. The story has the author and the illustrator as claymation-like characters in the book who are arguing about the way Chloe and the Lion are illustrated. It is hilarious.

Great for teaching CCSS concepts/roles of author and illustrator
I bought this book to use in my kindergarten classroom and was not disappointed. I introduced it by telling the students we were going to make a book together. I randomly assigned students to make illustrations on their own or to come in the group corner with me to write the text. After a few minutes, we brought the illustrators over with their pictures. I held the first picture up and began to read our text. The kids cracked up when their opening line about a girl dressing up as a mermaid for Halloween was matched with a picture of bugs. This led to a class discussion on what happens when authors and illustrators don't work together. I introduced the book as an example of this, which helped set the students up to understand the meta-story. We had to stop where Adam is drawing Mac as a present and then a cowboy for lunch. When we returned, the first thing my students said was, "Hey, weren't we going to finish that book?"This book presents the concept of author and illustrator in an explicit and entertaining way.

What a great book and unique too.
My seven years old son loves this book. He understands what's going on when author and illustrator are talking to each other about what to draw between dragon and lion in the story. Chloe the main character also talks to the author when he is about to give up on the story. This book makes the author and the illustrator part of the story as one of the main characters of the book. My four years old daughter doesn't get the book as my seven years old son gets it, but she still like to listen to when her brother reads to her. I love this book. If your child is in first grade this book will be a perfect gift for him/her, because they learn about story setting, main character, author, and illustrator in their class. Highly recommended.

A meta banter bore for my child
Adam Rex is a talented illustrator and writer – a great all around artist. I am not familiar with Mac Barnett, but prior to this book I’d buy anything with the name Adam Rex on the cover. That is why it pains me to give this book such a bad review. I cannot understand the amount of positive reviews for this title and cannot understand how a child would enjoy this book. The premise sounds great, but the book is basically back and forth meta banter between the author and illustrator and the story promised is lost and just background for these two, who are written into the tale and overshadow it to the point where there really is no story being told at all. For the price of the book and for how short it is, you are really not getting your moneys worth here. Huge disappointment. A bore for my child and let down for me as a fan for Rex. I would buy another Adam Rex book, because he truly is a great artist, but I feel as a team Barnett and Rex failed miserably. They might have had fun and a great time, but at our expense. Not a recommend for the ages it supposedly targets.

Lovely, if unusual story.
Sweet story with some definite plot twists. I bought this to read to my granddaughter Chloe, so it was special in that way. The vocabulary complexity is more toward the high end of the recommended age bracket, so it may be difficult for younger readers. The illustrations are first-rate.Service from the seller was good, but a little slow. Wrapping and shipping quality was exceptional.

Fun book! Offers a new Perspective for the reader.
Such a cute story. I love Mac Barnett books and the variety of styles he uses. This story is told in an unconventional way, showing you the point of view of the writer, illustrator, and the reader. Each of these people interacts with the adventure and story telling. It was a great book to inspire my niece with writing and illustrating her own stories.

Well-worth it
This story is fantastic fun. A bit post-modern in style as the storyteller and illustrator jump into the story to interact with the main character. My four year old niece, Chloe, loved it!

Very silly
This book is quite funny for the grown up reading it. My daughter loves it because her name is Chloe. Her dad loves it for the way the author and illustrator come to life in the book.
