Hydrometer
Does what it's supposed to. Excellent for determining the strength of the brew.

Does what it is designed to do
Ignore the fools who write reviews and have no idea how to use this. It works fine. Yes, you do need to either do some maths or use an online calculator to work out the alcoholic strength of your brew (in my case). It won't just tell you but this is exactly what it is supposed to do. The multitude of different measurements is a bit confusing but then also useful if you need this. Generally, a good inexpensive tool which is essential if you are homebrewing.

A must for all home brewers
Knowing the difference between ending fermentation and a stall is the difference between giving people a perfect example of why homebrew is just better these days, and a Molotov cocktail which sits there as a ticking time bomb. Regular hydrometer readings helps with that. I make mead and I don't do anything unless I have at least 4 readings. Primary, secondary, check, week later check. Minimum. You can work out how much alcohol you have, whether or not you need to backsweeten when it's really finished. This should be classed as essential health and safety tool for home brewing. Buy one.

brewing up a batch
This is what it says on the packet no more no less, a hydrometer that tells you when to bottle your beer. clean, clearly marked and accurate what more do you want or ask for?

On the small side
I needed a hydrometer after my last one broke, but I have had to buy another as this is too small to bee of much use. It works, but is awkward to read if there is much head on the beer you are measuring, and whereas my previous hydrometer had a tube in which to place it and measure, this one does not. Not so much a fault as just done better by someone else.

Bought this after my old hydrometer shattered in my sink during cleaning. It's made from thick, sturdy glass so it's not too likely to break during routine operations. The hydrometer has three scales for Specific gravity, sugar in Grams per liter and potential ABV. And most importantly, when it does eventually break, as all Hydrometers invariably do, it won't cover my floor in these annoying little lead pellets because the weight is one big resin blob which I assume contains lead, but will keep it all in one place. These are great, I'm buying a spare one right now.
