Some Excellent Material to Encourage Patients Recovering from Hip Surgery
An elderly relative that is a retired PhD engineer found the material in this book believable and relatable, so it has been helpful as he recovers from a fall that required hip surgery. Material is presented in an approachable manner, and is well illustrated. Many exercises would benefit elderly BEFORE they start becoming unsteady and would serve as a good core group of exercises to build into one's routine at any age!

Practical exercises for improving joint and muscle strength, as well as balance/coordination.
My professional work involves dealing with a large number of bodily injuries resulting from slip, trip, and fall incidents. While a portion of these incidents are due to improper or slippery surfaces, a large number of fall incidents (specially amongst senior citizens) are caused by insufficient muscle and joint strength to maintain one’s’ balance and coordination. I bought this book primarily for my father who was showing signs of imbalance and coordination. So, needless to say that I was, and still am, very concerned about him falling and injuring himself. He has been doing the exercises outlined in this book for about a month now and I can definitely see a dramatic difference in his balance and coordination. The book contains lots of easy and practical exercises that one can do around the house. All exercises are well-illustrated using pictures of common maneuvers that one can perform in the convenience of one’s home and using commonly available items around the house. I am not a senior citizen yet (getting close, lol), but I have started following the routines described in the book myself and can confidently say that they do make a huge difference. I highly recommend reading and following the routines described in this book to anyone experiencing joint and/or muscle weakness. It is a lot cheaper and more effective than going to physical therapy. Lol.

Stubborn old man who won't listen to his nurse daughter loves this book
My Dad won't use his cane as advised by his doctor. He won't go to a physical therapist as advised by his daughter (who is a nurse). He has neuropathy in his feet, affecting his balance, and goes hiking a lot solo. He fell on a hike with his poles, but at least he had friends with him. I sent this well reviewed book to him as a last resort. He was very excited to receive it and immediately read half of it. I suggest including a book stand to hold the book open, and even a clip-on light and /or page magnifier. That way the reader can practice the exercises while the pages stay open. Update: 3 months later he's still telling me how much he likes this book. I decided I'll also incorporate it into a project at a local nursing home to educate the residents on ways to prevent falls.

Has many of the elements of a fall prevention program with a physical therapist
I was recently referred to a physical therapist for a fall prevention program because I'm always losing my balance and I have peripheral neuropathy. Apparently, loss of balance is common among those with peripheral neuropathy. The first few visits with the physical therapist were exercises that allowed the PT to evaluate what was causing my loss of balance, since several elements go into our balance (our vision system, our sense of feeling of where we are in space, and our inner ear). Now, I'm on my own doing regular exercises assigned. by the PT. I've found that many of the exercises I did are in this book. One thing I learned from seeing the PT was that it is up to me to make a constant effort to feel my weight shifting in my feet as I move, rather than just taking it for granted that I can balance without paying attention, as I could when I was younger. Going through an exercise program like what is in this book is an excellent way to focus on those things that will make your balance better. Things won't change without ongoing effort.

Exercises for real people by real people!!
I bought this book for one of my elderly member in the extended family. I also put it on my iPad and read it myself. This book is fantastic. It starts out w significance of exercising for everyone whether one has balance problem, quickly touches on common causes of balance problems with an explanation of the system responsible for maintaining balance and control; briefly touches on mental limitations associated with fear of falling; and then beautifully sums it up in six myths about exercising and aging. The foundation so far developed expands out in very well-organized chapters w valuable information about exercise routines to prepare our bodies in all ages to prevent from getting into a situation that may lead to a fall. The author then goes on to outlining a set of exercises that would strengthen the body so one can better protect himself or herself against accidental falls. All exercises are described and then illustrated with companion photos. The exercise photos in this book are great. These are "real people" not "ultra-athletes". I recommend this book to everyone. Even if you don’t have a balance problem, you should probably start doing these exercises.

Losing Fear of Falling is Possible
The author demonstrates the benefits of strengthening your core through exercises that are clearly explained. As his goal is for the reader to slowly strengthen their core and their sense of balance, I also felt that his focus on this set of movements helped to raise an awareness of my body’s strengths. There is a gracious invitation to start exactly where you are.The companion videos are easy to access. I appreciated the author’s continued focus throughout the book of the exercise’s benefits. For example, for the ‘Narrow Stance Reach’ exercise I initially didn’t understand the reason behind such a simple motion. What did it help to strengthen? The author’s explanation was that this exercise helped when reaching for things in a tight space. The action, again, was training the core to balance the body.I would recommend this guide. The presentations have been carefully thought out. I noticed this particularly with Chapter 3’s “Grapevine. The visual line on the floor as a guide was a great idea!
