Cheerios Cereal Multi Grain, 18 ounces (510g), by CheeriosIn comparing the 12 ounce and 18 ounce packages of Multi Grain Cheerios to the 9 ounce box of Multi Grain Cheerios, they all list the same Nutrition Facts , and the same Ingredients. The Ingredients are listed in the same order, so in the three boxes, the Ingredients are proportionally the same. The only difference appears to be in the amount of cereal in the three boxes. This variety of Cheerios cereal contains five whole grain cereals in one box (corn, oats, barley, wheat, rice) in the form of a mixture of five different types of Cheerios. This mixture has its plusses and minuses compared to regular Cheerios. On the plus side, this mixture has a Total Fat of 1g, Sodium 120mg, versus the regular Cheerios having Total Fat of 2g, Sodium 140mg. On the minus side, this mixture has Calories 110, Potassium 140mg, Sugars 6g, Protein 2g, while regular Cheerios has Calories 100, Potassium 170mg, Sugars 1g, Protein 3g. So, for a breakfast cereal, you pick your poison, depending on which nutrition facts are more important to you. Myself, as a pre-diabetic, I would have to favor the regular Cheerios with 1g of sugar versus 6g of sugar, but if I had high blood pressure and had to minimize salt intake, I would pick the Multi Grain, with 120mg versus 140mg of Salt. Processed foods in general contain far too much salt and sugar. There is no winner here, just the lesser of two evils, and that lesser depends on your medical condition. The dietary fiber is 3g for both cereals, so that is not a tie breaker. If your Potassium levels are testing low, the regular Cheerios would get the nod, with 170mg versus 140mg of Potassium. There is not much difference in the taste, despite the variety of grains in the Multi Grain cereal. The only difference in taste, is in the differing amounts of sugar, which is noticeable. The difference in Salt taste is minor and is not noticeable. Comparing the two cereals, the devil is in the details. For other, more normal folks, who do not have to track Sugar, Salt, or Potassium consumption, both cereals taste good and are acceptable. It contains Canola Oil, which I hate, but the amount is miniscule. Four stars. The Nutrition Facts and Ingredients, as listed on the box, are as follows:Nutrition Facts: Serving Size 1 cup (29g), Servings Per Container: about 17.Calories 110 (Calories from Fat 10).Total Fat 1g (Saturated Fat 0g, Trans Fat 0g, Polyunsaturated Fat 0.5g, Monounsaturated Fat 0g).Cholesterol 0mg.Sodium 120mg.Potassium 140mg.Total Carbohydrate 24g (Dietary Fiber 3g, Sugars 6g, Other Carbohydrate 15g).Protein 2g.Ingredients: Whole Grain Corn, Whole Grain Wheat, Sugar, Whole Grain Oats, Whole Grain Barley, Whole Grain Rice, Corn Starch, Brown Sugar Syrup, Corn Bran, Salt, Tripotassium Phosphate, Canola and/or Rice Bran Oil, Color Added. Low in Sugar
A nutritionist said to try to eat cereal which has less than 7-8g of sugar. This Multi-Grain Cheerios only has 6g in a cup. They taste sweet, but not too sweet to my taste. You're not supposed to go over 50g of added sugar per day says the World Health Organization. So, 6g for breakfast is pretty good. Of course, regular Cheerios has less if you are really watching every gram of sugar. There is only 110 calories in a cup without milk - with 1/2 cup of skim milk it's 150 calories. Fat is low at 2%, with no saturated fat or trans fat. Fiber is only 10%. You get 45% of iron, 25% of thiamin, riboflavin and niacin. Five whole grains are included: corn, wheat, oats, barley and rice.I like to eat these dry for a snack at night if I'm wanting something crunchy.
