A webcam for the future. Buy one.
Is this the webcam that you should be getting? Let's find out.I have been using Lumina webcam for a few weeks for my zoom calls (yes, I have not tested with any other application, never needed to).I have an M1 MacBook pro from work and the webcam is mounted on my ultrawide monitor. Previously, I was using Opal C1 and while the webcam itself was great, I felt let down by the software so I started my quest to find a new one ... that does not feel like a BETA product. The obvious choices for me were Lumina AI, Insta 360 Link, Logitech Brio 4K, Elgato, and OBSBOT.Right off the bat, the Lumina webcam did not have the greatest reviews and I can't speak for others, but my experience is been very positive. I sort of took a bet to buy this webcam and why? ... because- I did not want to buy older models (like Logitech Brio)- spend more than $200 (otherwise, Insta 360 Link was very lucrative)Let's unpack the nuances and break down my overall experience so that YOU can make an informed purchase decision.Pros- Really small footprint. Unlike other webcams that I have tried in the past, this webcam is very lightweight and looks like chapstick (this is a good thing). This made me think if it can match the picture quality with a bigger lens webcam and YES, it can.- With sufficient light, the overall picture quality is great. I did not test it with dim light because I don't prefer working in dim environments and neither this webcam is a DSLR.- The microphone worked great during the testing. But I tend to use my Jabra headset for meetings. So YMMV.- A small led light in the front of the device serves as a good indicator when the device is in the use.- There is a magnetic lens cover so you can feel assured about not being on the camera when you don't wish to be. It's not the best implementation but better than nothing.- It uses USB C to USB C cable to connect to the MacBook. After the initial setup, I connected the webcam to my Belkin Thunderbolt 4 dock and it works seamlessly.- The included software has the magic sauce. You are able to fine-tune the picture to a very granular level or if you prefer using the included color card to allow the AI to make the adjustment, that works great too. In my case, I used the color card and then took that as the base to make the finer adjustments.- The camera has a "raw mode" which essentially means no adjustments. This mode is by default but the software gives a notification to set up the "Pro mode". In pro mode, you can make all the adjustments and use that as the preferred setting in zoom.- With pro mode, you have the webcam keep you in a preferred frame, even when moving. Now, this is not a PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) webcam but has a wide FOV that allows it to crop to your preference.- Finally, I had a chance to schedule a meeting with the support team and they helped me to fine-tune my settings and hear my feedback. This is a big plus in my book ... You have to listen directly from the customer.Cons- This is not a plug-and-play webcam. I mean, you can use it that way but software brings it to the life. But the installation and configuration process is a hassle. Once you download the software, you're forced to register for an account and obtain a license key by email before you can proceed. To get the license key, you need the serial number of your device. As a customer, why do I need to go through all that?- The background blur feature is weak, I am able to see a lot of details with max level. This needs to be fixed.- The mounting system requires you to use a hex wrench. IMO, that's a clunky implementation. I would have preferred, a click mechanism or thumb screw or screw with a built-in tightening mechanism. With a hex wrench, I have one more thing to worry about losing.- The included privacy cover is magnetic but it still requires two hands to cover or uncover. If you use one hand, the webcam is so light (a good thing), it moves from the position.Overall - I am very happy with the purchase. My main issues are primarily with the software and with time and feedback, those can be fixed.

Delivers on Its Promises.
I have a low-light setup in my office with a window to my right and a dim overhead light. My old 1080p Logitech camera always made me look like I was in a cave, no matter how much I adjusted the settings. The Lumina camera is a big improvement. The automatic lighting and color balancing work well, but the color card calibration really takes it to the next level and performs better than I expected in poor lighting. The software is easy to use, and by default, it runs at 720p with AI effects, which keeps CPU usage low. While running, it uses about 6% of my CPU and 3% of my GPU. You can customize lighting, coloring, framing, and even adjust the resolution for DSLR-like quality if you want.Overall, I’m really happy with my purchase and am recommending it to my remote work colleagues.

Replaced my DSLR! Works for bald heads!
I Love my Lumina webcam so much that I just bought a second one so I can have one at home and one in the office.I bought my first Lumina as part of their early release before their IndiGoGo campaign. I've used it for a year now and can say that it's been great to see their MIT software engineers move fast and push improvements. They're friendly, responsive, and quick to address feedback. The AI is great and has only gotten better. Finally software that doesn't cut off part of my bald head! Other webcams were so horrible for the follicly challenged that many of us don't use blur at all. From day one, the Lumina AI has been heads and shoulders above the rest--and they keep improving.I originally bought one and successfully replaced my DLSR setup. I took my setup seriously because I wanted to look credible when I pitched investors, enterprise customers, and government contracts. I had set up a Sony alpha DSLR with a 55 - 200mm Sony lens. I set up the camera on a tripod across the room so I could get a true Boken effect. For sound I used a Yeti Blue microphone. It gave a professional impression, but the entire system was cumbersome overkill. The Sony DSLR camera wasn't designed as a webcam and was slow. The drivers were clunky. I was always tripping over the cables on the floor. And worst of all, it was hard to make eye contact with the DSLR camera so I set up the tripod in front of a 86-inch tv. The camera blocked some of the screen but it gave people I was meeting with the impression that I was looking directly at them. All of that to say that I took my setup seriously.Remarkably, no one could tell a difference when I switched out my complicated DSLR and microphone system for the Lumina! One tiny little box replaced my DLSR, cables running across the room to a tripod in front of a largescreen tv. The image processing rivals my DSLR setup and the zoom feature is vastly superior to the built-in Macbook Pro camera because Lumina lets me zoom and frame my background. Now I can't live without features like the "Cameraman", where it frames me and tracks me as I move. When I went back to the office, I installed my Lumina on my monitor at work. It solves a frustrating problem with hybrid work: I use it in my office when we have multiple people physically present in the same room who want to be on a Zoom or Meet call with people working remotely. The microphone is good enough to pick up people who want to chime in from the other side of the office.Even though the camera has a small footprint and is easily portable when I travel, I prefer to have a dedicated setup at work. I bought this as my second Lumina so I can keep one at home instead of remembering to pack the camera on days when I need to take calls out of the office.Worked great on my Intel Macbook and works even better when I upgrade to an M1 Macbook Pro.
