Bachmann Industries Ballast Spreader (N Scale )

Looks like it should work. Watched utube videos. I hope that it does make ballasting easier.

This Bachmann Ballast Spreader was very easy to use while distributing the ballast pretty evenly and very efficiently. A practice run is not necessary, but it helps to get an idea how fast the ballast is distributed.

I found its performance lacking. Most issues can be traced to the bottom plate.It dispensed too much ballast. The ties between the rails were covered. The sides had way to much ballast.I had to use a soft painting brush to remove the excess. This was so much work, that it was easier to apply the ballast with a spoon and use the same brush.The issue with the sides may be a result of how I lay track. I mount the track raised by tabs of double stick foam tape. Then, I fasten the track in place by flooding the ballast with matte medium thinned by a water and alcohol mix.But that doesn’t explain the coverage between the rails. The bottom plate of the spreader should have slots for the rails cut deeper. The spreader plate should be thinner at the front and the back edge should be rounded. This will allow the back edge to ride right on the ties and clear ballast from the ties.Otherwise, the construction is clean and stable. It just didn’t help me apply my N scale ballast.

The bottom side flange was to wide for the narrows. I removed them and the ballast spreader works great.

Excellent way to add balast to my N gauge track. So realistic

I’m a newbie to model railroading, but I definitely thought this was an exceptional way to lay standard and uniform ballast.

I bought this with hopes of making ballasting easier. It didn't. Puts down way more ballast than needed. I spent more time removing excess ballast than I would have spent spreading ballast with a small spoon. Needless to say this thing will be sitting on a shelf collecting dust and the spoon will go back into service

My fault I ordered the wrong scale. “N Scale” when I should have ordered HO scale.
