Kindness is one in a series of simple small books that help us to talk with young children about important aspects of personal social and emotional development - including friendship, calmness, bravery. The Kindness book features children at a party and each double page has a word such as Welcome, Helping, Taking Turns with well composed drawings showing that quality in action and a brief example for each. This is a good way of giving children the tools and strategies to recognise what Kindness is. Too often we tell children to Be Kind, Be Good etc without helping them to understand what that looks like in practice. There are useful pointers at the end of the book on how to use it to start conversations with children and a short glossary of words like comfort, being in a pickle. My wife was an early years teacher and knows that it really helps young children learn to take charge of their own behaviour if they have the words and actions to help them. We also have the Bravery book in this series and that has been very useful for a grandchild who tends to cry wolf too much at the smallest incident! Recommended for use at home and in group settings.

I love this series of books-I also have Calmness and Friendship and am using them in my job as an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant as it helps to talk about emotional issues especially with younger children. This books looks at the things a child can do or expect to feel to be a kind person such as understanding and listening. It’s set out simply with calming illustrations and I just love the ideas behind it as all children need to understand kindness. Beautifully put together to read with your child.

Each double page spread introduces a word and then explains it simply for young children. The words are summed up in a glossary at the end (not really needed, but does introduce glossaries to young children). There is also a section for grown ups giving ideas on how to use this book and teach their children the concepts in it, which is great. This book is a hardback with thin pages, which seems odd. Really it needed to be a board book as the text is very simple. As it is flimsy a page has already been torn and repaired with tape. The illustrations are nice and show the concepts well.
