Great way to extend coverage in a less than ideal environment
I purchased this device to help my dad with his home network. He currently has a very low-end D-Link router and several other issues that limit his current network. His home is all brick, it has a very unusual layout that includes a giant brick chimney running through the middle of the house, it has plaster walls, and he has a wireless camera system that absolutely destroys the 2.4 ghz band. I have some experience with Ubiquiti hardware in my house so I thought I would give this a try since the UniFi line performs so well for me.First, setup is a breeze and very comparable to consumer wifi gear. Unlike most consumer wifi gear, Ubiquiti (and Amplifi) update their products fairly regularly. For this reason I recommend updating the firmware as soon as you connect the device to your network. I think I clicked on the image of the mesh point in the app to get the menu and selected "check for updates". If not just play around...it is pretty intuitive.Second, move the mesh point around a lot. I tried 4-5 plugs in his house before I was completely satisfied with the results. Once I found the ideal plug, I received very little benefit from moving the antenna around on the base.Once everything was set up I was able to reach the limits of his internet service speed at the mesh point. The Amplifi did not solve the 2.4 ghz interference problem but I really did not expect it to since the mesh point was not really designed to work with D-Link crap. The situation is not ideal for a wireless network of any kind but I was very happy with the result and the ability to extend the network to the back part of the house. I did have a question during setup and used the chat feature on the Amplifi website. I received help immediately and my question was answered (there was no queue for help).Ultimately I would be better off running CAT6 and putting UniFi access points in his house, but this seems like it will work for now and improve his coverage in previously dead areas. I should have purchased the AmpliFi router as well to replace the D-Link but I will save that project for another day.Update: I tinkered with my D-Link router settings and am even more impressed with this Amplifi device now. Solved the interference problem almost completely by reducing the power on the 2.4 band to low and left the 5 ghz on high. The Amplifi was/is using 5 ghz as the backbone and rebroadcasts on both 2.4 and 5. The result is a very stable network (on both bands) in a part of the house that never had coverage in the past. The Amplifi has done a significantly better job of dealing with the camera interference than the D-Link ever did.

Not as easy to set up as they would have you believe...FIXED
I have a fair amount of home networking experience. I use Google mesh and have set up countless smart tvs, wifi cameras from nest, Yi, etc and various routers, access points, range extenders, smart home hubs, home automation etc. I'm no stranger to minor glitches and am able to overcome most. I purchased these because of the range and supposed ease of set up. They are NOT intuitive, the directions are not very helpful. I haven't tried customer service, that's my next step but I'm losing patience fast. These are large and heavy...sturdy. They plug directly into an outlet. They have small leds and sounds that are supposed to clue you in when they are ready for set up, when they are working etc....the sounds were hit or miss. There should be a simple button on the app to add a mesh point (similar to Google wifi), there is not. It's a process to just add an additional point. They do not automatically add or recognize the additional points. Once set up the points go offline constantly....even though for testing I had them in the same 400 sq foot room. The app is not very good, not like Google mesh at ALL...you can't use the app to check the mesh like you can google, it doesn't automatically notify you when something is offline. It's hard to know the range, because the points continuously go offline. In fact, it's hard to tell if it works at all.I'll try them again in a few months when the app is more intuitive and user friendly, and when the points stay connected. Right now, there is definitely room for improvement. I will be sending it back...all of it... the router and two points, along with the additional THREE I purchase to expand the range. That's over $600 of equipment I needed and wanted to like but couldn't.Edited - I added a star...after several days the antenna firmware finally updated and now they are being recognized by the router. Took about 10 hard resets to finally trigger the firmware updates, but it finally happened. Will test them out and revise reviews accordingly. Guys at amplifi....it really shouldn't be this hard...simplify your app., make it more intuitive and user friendly, and make the firmware updates more reliable, or have a button to check for firmware...that would have saved me hours of resetting and trying to configureUpdate the company pushed a firmware update that prompts you to update and it is MUCH better. As a result, I have no issues now and updated the rating. My system is in a vacation home 3000 miles away and I LOVE being able to remotely monitor and reset the router and points.
