Mandala Sgraffito Plate (Burgundy)

Description

This one-of-a-kind serving plate was decorated with original designs using the sgraffito technique. The plate is first hand-formed from a single slab of porcelain clay. While the clay is still moist, a thin layer of liquid porcelain (slip) or underglaze of contrasting color is brushed onto the face of the plate. The design is then meticulously carved through the slip or underglaze to reveal the original clay beneath. Depending on the complexity of the design, the carving (a.k.a. sgraffito work) can take from hours to days to complete. After the sgraffito design is finished, it is covered with a clear, food-safe glaze and fired twice to ensure long-lasting durability. Due to the handmade nature of the Sgraffito plate, colors, design and size will vary slightly, adding character and interest to the final product.
