This is exactly what I was looking for in a composition notebook cover. I use composition books for note taking at work and have spent months looking for a professional cover, but anything that seemed of similar or better quality was $100 or more. The cover is made of a thick, durable leather with a smooth finish. I have the cover for almost two months now and it is holding up very nicely. I know some people have said the quality is not up to par, but I would remind folks this is a LEATHER cover for less than $40. It is supposed to have a rustic quality as stated in the description. For those who need reminding, rustic means of, relating to, or suitable for the country, simple or unpolished. So one should expect the cover to have a handmade quality about it. Variances in the stitching, or patina of the leather should be expected. Given that, this is a very nice product that I expect to last for years.

This leather composition cover is exactly what I was looking for. I usually start a composition book for notes, tasks and ideas in January and that one book lasts an entire year. In the past, I have resorted to taping the cover with packing tape and using logo and brand stickers to cover all of the worn places since this composition book literally goes out in the field with me.This leather cover is perfect! Supple and soft after I added Atsko Sno-Seal leather conditioner to it; which also protects from scratches, water and repel stains. The workmanship was as expected for a handmade leathergood. The only flaw is the stitching on the inside of the back cover. The stitching ran off the interior leather piece but it looks as if it will not pull apart since the stitching goes through the leather without flaw.The composition books that I buy fits perfectly in the interior when opened or closed. The leather cover and composition book lies flat when opened--which is the main reason I don't use Moleskine or any other bound edge books.This product was deserving of 5 stars but I gave it a 4 because I felt with the flaw in the stitching I should not have had to pay full price for this product.I would definitely buy this product again and I am thinking about buying it in black for my husband for Christmas and having his initials stamped on it.

This leather cover is beautiful. Fits my notebooks perfectly, the price and expectations were 100% met.

I was on the fence about this purchase. I read people's reviews about their product experiences and it made me question the size and quality of what I was purchasing. However, upon receiving this cover I was immediately impressed by the beauty of the leather - the quality, smell and feel was wonderful. Some people had complained about scratches and discolorations and creases - this wasn't the case for me. Likewise, the stitching was very nice too. Nothing loose or "unfinished" looking. There were many complaints about the rough cut edges. I did notice this, and although the edges aren't finished by wax or other edge-finishing compounds, they weren't BAD. All I did was take some 150-grit sandpaper and rub it around all the edges, and presto - everything was nice and smooth! From reading reviews, I was concerned about the fit of the composition books. Some people indicated that they needed to be cut down, etc. While mine isn't tight, you can see that this is made to fit. The composition book that came with it fit well. I also ordered some Mead and some Emraw composition books. Both brands fit well. There is no play in the fit - but they slide right in and fit perfectly! Finally, I own a laser engraver and did some engraving on the cover. This leather engraves beautifully! Overall this is going to make a GREAT gift, at a very reasonable price, and it is very nice quality. For the price I would definitely buy more!!!

I've been using this notebook for a few weeks and so far it's been terrific. The outer shell is made from a single piece of top grain leather. The pockets have been stitched on and appear to be from the same cut of leather. These pockets secure the front and back covers of the removable composition notebook. I've also been using these pockets to hold loose leaf paper and it works great. I also appreciated that there are no emblems or logos on the outside. Rustic Ridge's logo is imprinted in the leather at the bottom of the front pocket but is hardly noticeable.The thickness of the leather is approximately 0.075" (2 mm).***Update 12/17/14 (Original Post 4/4/14)***After 9 months of use this notebook has held up perfectly. The stitching is still tight and the leather shows it will patina nicely over time. I've replaced the inner composition notebook for the second time of what I hope will be many more. For those looking to replace the composition notebook - this fits best with a standard 100 page 9.75" x 7.5" book with rounded corners.
