My 6 yr old had a project to make a picture or model of the Earth. This kit was perfect for what we wanted. My 6 yr old was able to paint the moon and earth by herself with little help from myself. The kit was easy to assemble. The earth and moon came in two halfs that click together very easily. They both have etched printing. The earth has islands and continents on it that helps with painting them. My kiddo and I painted a vague outline of the globe. We did not use the glow in the dark pain mainly because we were short on time. The earth spins and the moon rotated around the earth which my daughter loved. It was tight and squeaky at first but by the time she brought it back home from school it rotated smoothly. Both the earth and the moon slide off easily if the whole thing is picked up but we don't move it often. Overall the kit was great. Perfect for school projects or just to display.

I didn't look closely enough at this before buying it and didn't realize I would be painting as well as assembling the mobile for my sons. I simply wanted a finished mobile as my sons like everything 'space'. I am glad I made the mistake as the painting is pretty easy and it looks great in my sons' room. The paint dries very quickly (2 hours for a coat to dry in cold weather) so it can be completed in a short period of time. The mobile is easy to put together. I would have preferred the string to be something other than fishing wire which requires you to knot it more than once to save it coming undone when it stretches. It is a bit fiddly but they are generous with the wire which makes life easier. If you follow the instructions it is easy to balance the mobile. The poster that is included is a bonus. The fact that the mobile spins slowly in the slightest breeze (like closing the door) just makes it more authentic. The only bit that really didn't work well for me was the glow in the dark paint. I must have been doing something wrong as it was too thick to apply evenly. In the end I wiped it off and went without. Painting instructions would improve the product as it primarily tells you to follow the picture on the box. A smaller brush is really needed to paint the finest areas properly. The fact that it is hanging from the ceiling (no close viewing) means that you can get away with what is provided. Overall it is a very good product and makes learning about the solar system fun and interesting. It is a nice decoration for the room and we have fun pointing out the planets and learning what makes them different from each other. To be able to show why it is dark at night and moving on from 'the sun has gone to bed' as an explanation has been my highlight to date. Having seen the product I will purchase it again as a birthday present for a 9 / 10 year old.

I'd give this 4.5 stars if that were an option (and why isn't it an option, by the way?). It was perfect for our needs as an elementary home school family. My first grader loved it and was able to learn from the 3D, hands-on experience. There's no better way to learn an abstract concept. I snapped the planets together and sanded them slightly with the sandpaper square to "rough them up" before painting, as suggested. My seven-year-old and I snapped them into position on the model and then painted them together. The paint adhered to the planets very well. The glow paint didn't work well when we mixed it with other paints, but it did work well on the planets that we applied it to as a top layer (just a little FYI). This model is very small, but that works well for us. Just for reference, the "sun" is about the size of a ping pong ball. Jupiter is about the size of a giant marble, maybe a bit larger. The planets and distances between are not to scale but served our purpose well. We were wanting to learn about orbits, positions of the planets, and sequence from the sun. The only thing I would have liked to change was the fact that the set doesn't include Pluto. Yes, I know it's no longer considered a planet as it is now considered a "dwarf planet". Still, I would've liked to have it in the set.
