Vallejo Transparent Paint Set, 17ml

I got these to try slap chop with, because contrast paints doesn’t produce a good finish. These work so much better. The warm colors don’t even need thinned, but will look better applied in two or three thin layers. Cool colors need slightly thinned.Mix with inks and bam they will give you a great finish at half the cost.

This is my second set of these paints - I've been using them for about a year. Here are some of the ways I use them: CONTRAST PAINT/SPEED PAINT/XPRESS COLOR: They work much like Citadel Contrast Paints, Army Painter Speed Paints, or Vallejo Xpress Colors if you thin them slightly with water, and they can be mixed with those other brands to make new colors. Here's how it works - first use black and white primer to create all the hilights and shadows on your mini, then give it color by layering on your colored glazes. BLENDING, HILIGHTS & COLOR TRANSITIONS: Tip - I recommend adding the White Glaze and Black Glaze colors to this set so you can create hilight and shadow tints for all the other colors. Transparent paints make blending easy since the base color shows through. Glazes are not as thin as an ink or a wash, so you can control whether the paint goes down into the cracks and crevices or just touches the raised surfaces. Adding Vallejo glaze medium will make them even more transparent without thinning them too much. MAKING WASHES: If you purposely thin these paints with water, they make fantastic washes. (A wash is thin enough that it mostly collects in the grooves to emphasize the texture details.) TRANSPARENT FIRE OR MAGIC EFFECTS: You can tint transparent miniatures, such as the gelatinous cube, without losing the transparency of the model. MIXING CUSTOM COLORS: the red, blue, and yellow glazes that come in this set are very primary and are great for mixing custom hues. It's a shame the set didn't come with the Black Glaze and White Glaze colors - you need them to make highlight and shadow tints. FINAL NOTES: these paints are not glossy like Vallejo Game Inks, but they're not quite as matt as some of my mini paints. I got some Vallejo Mecha Matte Varnish to compensate, but the sheen difference is so slight I haven't bothered to use it yet.

As a scale modeler, I bought this to add to my expanding Vallejo paint collection. I use Vallejo exclusively due to being semi-availabe at my local "Big Box" hobby store. I needed some transparent paint for aircraft and vehicle modeling so I naturally bought Vallejo. The two colors I used worked fine for my project. There may indeed be better brands out there, but I stick to one brand, and these served my purpose.

Great set. Gives depth to base coat. Creates a layered look.

Good selection, quality paints

This did exactly what I wanted it to. Coloring the spell effects on miniatures while still leaving them see throughish. Washes couldn't do it but this does it easily. Thanks Vallejo for a great product.
