Fun, beginner-friendly racing set that keeps kids entertained
I picked up this Carrera First Mario Kart set for my little one who just turned 4, and it has been a big hit in our house. Right out of the box the theme grabs attention since it’s Mario and Yoshi, characters my child already recognizes from the games. The track itself is just under 8 feet long once it’s set up, and while that doesn’t sound huge on paper, it’s plenty of space for two cars to race side by side and feels exciting for kids at this age. Setup and Assembly Assembly was straightforward. The pieces of track snap together tightly and the instructions are simple to follow. It runs on 4 C batteries, which I had to buy separately, but the good thing is there are no cords to trip over so we could set it up in the playroom or even bring it to grandma’s house without worrying about outlets. It’s also easy to break down into smaller sections when you need to store it. Kid-Friendly Controls The controllers are designed really well for little hands. My child had no issue figuring out how to hold and use it. The electronically regulated speed makes a huge difference because with other slot car sets I’ve seen, younger kids get frustrated when the cars fly off the track constantly. Here, the cars stay on most of the time so the kids actually get to race instead of spending all the time resetting. The spinners on the track add a fun little twist that makes the cars wobble or slow slightly, which had my kid giggling every time. Play Experience This set is perfect for quick play sessions and it’s fun enough that siblings or parents will want to join in. We’ve had a few “best two out of three” races that turned into full-blown tournaments. The Mario and Yoshi cars are sturdy and colorful, and after multiple crashes they’re still holding up well with no broken parts. Durability and Storage After a couple weeks of use, everything still clicks together tightly and the cars run smoothly. Since it’s battery-powered, I’d recommend keeping rechargeable C batteries on hand if you plan on using it often because kids don’t want to stop once they get going. The track doesn’t take up too much space, but you’ll want to clear a small area on the floor since it’s not really designed to sit on a table. Overall Impression This is a great starter racing set for kids as young as 3. The speed control makes it more forgiving than traditional slot car sets, and the Mario Kart theme adds instant excitement. It’s not as advanced as the bigger Carrera tracks, but that’s exactly what makes it good for beginners. If you’re looking for a fun toy that combines recognizable characters with hands-on play (and pulls kids away from screens for a while), this set is worth it.

As pictured
My son loves this. The reviews were not so great but i went ahead and ordered. Glad i did. The instructions have no wording just pictures but the tracks is easy if you follow the box picture. I had a bit of difficulty making one part stand as i didnt understand the image but eventually figured it out. As for the spinners, side images and center picture, its made of cardboard. The spinners comflat so you have to cut them out. The center image is literally the back of the box -_-. Wished the company would have at least included a punched out image in the box so it can be less time consuming but no. And the spinners being that its cardstock kinda suck, as they either fly out or stop the car. They would have been waaay better as a plastic piece. Oh well. The tracks do start to come apart as my son plays an djumps but it doesnt stop the cars. So i like that. Although if i push one side in another side starts to come out. But I still gaved it 5 stars because my son really likes it and the cars just go round and round. Although i notice mario ALWAYS wins. He seems to go faster even if i switch him sides. Lol

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
I rated 1 star but it’s not even worth that. Bought this for my son for Christmas. He got so much stuff that he is just now deciding to put this together to play. We put it together, put the batteries in and only the Yoshi worked for a couple minutes and then it just stopped working. Total waste of money. This thing was 40 dollars, plus I had to buy C batteries separately. So a total of 50.00 was wasted on this toy. The company who made these should be ashamed of themselves. I am pissed I wasted my money. Will never purchase anything from them again.

Decent
The assembly is more difficult than a hot wheels track and it doesn't stay together either. It's extremely difficult to connect the tracks and make sure it stays, but with movement and use it'll separate anyway. I'd consider gluing it together, but with how much my kids enjoy it I may leave the option open for getting the expansion. My 2yo amd 4yo are mario kart fanatics and knew right away that I'd have to cut out pieces from the box for the decor. The problem is that these little karts go fast and fly off frequently. With new batteries the car still doesn't "go" all the time and we'd have to pause a bit, push everything back together, readjust karts, make sure nothing is out of place, and then it'll go again if all stars align. The controllers will occasionally switch tracks as well for some reason. With this being their first set I had hoped to grow them into the more expensive/impressive sets but don't think the frustration of having to be there to reassemble everything after each race is worth it for me even if the kids are having a lot of fun. I might cave and buy it anyway just because the kids don't mind chasing the cars as it flies off the tracks.
