Technical adventure
This is a very technical book - if that's your interest it really brings to life why Bruges, van Eyck and his revolutionary techniques matter to a deep understanding of art, culture and their development

Great record of the exhibition
I was booked to see the exhibition but the Covid lockdown caused it to be cancelled so this was at least a way of seeing the paintings close up with good commentary.

A scholarly book
If there is one piece of art you wish to contemplate this Easter Sunday 2021, the Ghent altarpiece is an excellent choice. It vividly illustrates many facets and phases in the life of Jesus. Painted by Jan van Eyck ( with the collaboration of his brother Hubert van Eyck) it is a huge altarpiece in which every item drawn is related to Biblical theology. This book was published in 2020 to accompany the largest van Eyck exhibition ever to be held which was supposed to be in 2020 in Ghent. Due to Covid-19 it was cancelled. The essays here are scholarly. The pictures big and captured the brilliant colours of the oli paintings . Beginners to van Eyck will however struggle with this book. It is best to start with a basic book or a youtube documentary that gives the salient facts on van Eyck and the Ghent altarpiece before one attempts this book.

Beautiful book but poor quality binding
Nearly returned this book for a refund because of the quality of the binding (possibly damaged in transit) - hence the 3 star rating - but decided to keep it as returning items is difficult for me due to mobility issues. It is a beautiful book however and the quality of the reproductions first rate. I particularly love the green spine with stands out on my bookshelf. If you get a good quality one, keep it and treasure it!

Disappointing
A very disappointing book, had expected much more, especially as it accompanied the blockbuster exhibition in Ghent to celebrate the artist’s life and work and the restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece. The reproductions are muddy and surprisingly poor for a Thames and Hudson publication. I compared the reproduction of the Arnolfini Marriage in a National Gallery book and the colour contrast is striking, even more so given the NG book was published in the mid-seventies. The close ups and enlargements are useful but scattered throughout the book and not always in relation to the text. The essays are dry and academic and seem to be written more for an audience already familiar with scholarly research into the artist than someone wanting a summary of this great artists life and work. I have ordered a copy of the Taschen basic series book on the artist, a good overview, much better reproductions and good value at under £10.

This is a really wonderful book. If you missed the exhibition then this is the second best thing . It is a huge book, that is printed very well . Very much recommended.

Just a piece of paper with a print on it. Not worth anywhere near what they are asking for it.
