Reasonable Price For A Big Batch of Early Sixties Lightnin' Hopkins Tunes
This isn't a bad way to get a Lightnin' Hopkins song infusion into your collection - especially if you take advantage of the low prices offered by some of the Amazon sellers. The sound varies from album to album, especially noticeable in the output levels. You may be adjusting the volume quite a bit if you listen to the collection in a random sequence. Mostly it all sounds pretty good though. One of the albums has some distortion in the guitar that makes my cheapo speakers rattle from time to time, but that isn't unique to this release - it's in the recording.Even though Amazon lists this as a box set, I wouldn't call it that. The 4 CDs are housed in a single plastic case, the size of a double CD case. There is no booklet. There are no liner notes. You are on your own if you want more information. The only information provided is a track list and the names of the original LPs. Here is the list of albums included:Lightnin' Hopkins (1959)Last Night Blues (with Sonny Terry) (1960)Mojo Hand (1960)Lightnin' (1960)Blues In My Bottle (1961)Walkin' This Road By Myself (1962)Lightnin' & Co. (1962)Lightnin' Strikes (1962)I give this a 4 star rating because these are indeed 8 classic albums and I got them for for what worked out to be about a buck and a half per album. If the sound were more even from album to album I probably would have added a star. The claim on the cover that these albums are "digitally remastered and enhanced for superior quality" pretty much means nothing. The sound is decent enough to enjoy, but nothing to marvel about.

Mind blowing fabulous dont miss it music
Fabulous fabulous fabulous, and I am only through the first three discs. Excellent production value and stereo stereo stereo which I did not expect. This is my fourth investment which I am sure will become a real Lightnin Hopkins collection in very short order . I expected crummy old recordings generally and mono almost exclusively. Instead I find out these old sound engineers did a great job! On this collection and on Mr. Sam the Music Man generally. These first two discs starts with ten songs from his historical 1959 album recorded by The Smithsonian Institute. Yet, that is merely the beginning of a fantastic collection of 80 songs! Many with other instruments or drums backing.Songs I was shocked to hear lightnin recording in 1961 or so:Bad Luck and Trouble (later reworked by ... Cream)See That My Grave is Kept Clean (" Dylan)Fan It ( " Willie)How Many More Years ("Zepplin) change Years to Times-- same germAnd these are simply great songs made popular by others. Lightnin has great songs in this compilation and no bad ones. I cannot believe it took me so long to discover his outstanding genius as a songwriter, guitarist and yes singer beyond compare if you have the equipment to pick up the nuances and tembre and harmonic overtones in his rich and extremely powerful voice. If you are thinking of a Lightnin collection you cannot go wrong here. Even the Happy Blues for Johnn Glenn song is here-- and it's Awedome-- as is the Christmas Santa song and Mamas Coffee song etc. etc. etc.

Multiple Lightnin' Strikes!!!
This might just be the best music purchase I've made this year!! I've been aware of and had a handful of Lightnin' Hopkins songs...but, after buying this set of his first eight album releases (I think) I am totally amazed at what this man did and how he did it. Most every song is a winner if you like that simple Texas Country Blues/Folk type music. Awesome!! For the price and the quality & quantity of material, I'd recommend this for any music lover's collection...and if you're a Blues enthusiast, it is a must have!! That's the Short n Sweet of it...really no reason to go into a long detailed write up.Free Hugs!!Keep On Rockin' In The Free World!!Be The Change You Would Like The World To Make!!Outlaw X

Defines Texas Blues.....
Lightnin' Hopkins was electric R&B, acoustic solo/storyteller and country blues shuffle in one package. These eight albums captures the legend during his rediscovery period, improving a bit as a singer. Rock fans might connect to his small band, juke joint shuffle/ sound which influenced Stevie Ray Vaughan and Z.Z. Top. My preference is Sam's self-titled album playing alone in a rented room in Houston, recorded back in 1959. His improvisational skills as a master storyteller is what Hopkins did best. That album listed first by itself makes this collection well worth the purchase. Eight albums on four discs is a deal. Many talented greats have come from this state. If I had to choose one artist that got the regional blues sound of what is Texas. I go with Sam Lightnin' Hopkins....................TEXAS OTHER FAVORITES.....Henry Thomas - Texas Worried Blues 1927-1929...Blind Lemon Jefferson - The Rough Guide 2 x CD (Bonus Country Blues Pioneers)...T-Bone Walker - The Ultimate Collection 1929-57.....Freddie King - Ultimate Collection.....Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog.....Gatemouth Brown - Texas Swing

Not a best ever
It gets a five because the sound is good and you know what you are getting:everything from a certain period in Lightnin's career. Bought it as a gift and have listened to about half of it. Lightnin' had many phases and this is one of them. Enjoy, and get ready to buy more Lightnin'

Lightnin Hopkins at his best
I am impressed mot only with the recording but the packaging is amazing. It is the best package of an artist I have had to date on CD. The sound quality is excellent. If you were a marginal Hopkins fan because you heard a poor quality recording, take another listen. This man was a pioneer in the blues. His voice is unmistakable and his honesty is wonderful in a world that has lost that.

Contains Bob Dylan's inspiration for 'Leopard skin pillbox hat'
Lightnin' Hopkins was a supreme bluesman - he had it all, the voice, the muscianship, but most importantly the inventiveness. Eight quality albums in a few years illustrates just how productive this man was .., I however have another CD in my collection of a recording session around the dates of these albums, so he was even more productive..., heck there may be more.I highly recommend you buy this if you in anyway like the blues, and / or a musician who wants to listen to a master at work.

Lightnin' Hopkins, Blues legend.
This is an excellent collection of 8 albums from the Blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins, the quality of the recordings is superb, been remastered and of course Lightnin' is absolutely brilliant throughout, very funny guy, some of the track titles are mixed-up but not many, Don't let this put you off, the music is stunning...

A must for blues lovers
A brilliant compilation in a four CD pack. If you love blues, as I do, it's a must have from a legendary artist. I've seen in these reviews that there is no track listings but that is not the case with my pack so I can only assume that maybe there are some pirate copies around or it's possible I misread that review.
