The item description lists that it requires a 1x 12V battery. Does it mean it NEEDS a battery? Or the highest input is 12V?

Does not require batteries. I used it in a low voltage application to turn on/off LED light strip. My power source was a 100-240V AC input to 12V DC output power adapter.

Just received my switch. It doesn't feel like it's magnetic at all. Does it only become magnetic once power is applied? (Is this an electro magnet?)

The switch is NOT an electromagnet. The switch is in two sections, the actual switch, which responds to an external magnet, and the actuator, which is a permanent magnet. When the actuator is brought near the switch, it causes the switch to change state. The normally open contact closes, and the normally closed contact opens. When the actuator is removed, the switch reverts to its normal state.

I agree with Edward and Pilot in that both pieces are the same size, the switch side depth being a bit larger due to screws protruding. Length, height, and depth as already said. However, when I measure mounting slot centers on this thing with a 6 inch metal scale, I get 1-13/16" center-to-center (or about 1.8"). So, two holes spaced at 1-13/16" (or 1.8") is what is needed for mounting. Also, measuring the slot width (for screw), slot width is about .12", so 3/32" (.094") screws will work

Do these have to be mounted as shown, or can one be rotated 90 degrees?

Yes, you can rotate on of them 90 degrees. It helps to experiment a bit with the orientation and placement before you permanently mount them.
