what is difference between the red and blue versions of these connectors

Sorry, I am unable to see any blue lamp holders. Even the red ones are for different bulb types. GU10, G4 and MR16. It may be you are looking at a different brand and will do the same job. Hope that helps.

I need some 12v 100w holders so as these are rated to 2a only I guess they won't take the current needed [about 8a] on 12v?

Do these lamp holders need a 12 V transformer?

Yes. You can only use 12 volt led bulbs therefore you will need a 12 volt transfomer. However they are good for using in 12 volt pv systems on caravans boat etc.

Is there a standard name mount for the mount this attach these to, the back has a funny shape?
