Great for 'newbies'
I recently started playing chess about 3 weeks ago and although I found the learning curve quite hard at first, I can definitely say that I picked up on it quite a bit. I thought I was getting quite competent at first until I got confident enough to try playing against some more experienced chess veterans, wherein I then realized how much more I had to learn about the game. I picked up this book in an attempt to learn some new strategies and tricks and I can truly say that it has improved my game substantially. My brother, who has been playing for FAR longer than me, has even noticed a huge difference in my chess skills and I think that's a great testament to the quality of the material that can be found in "How to Play Chess for Beginners".What I admire most about this book is that the writing style is incredibly straightforward and professional, yet it's also overlapped with a smooth, almost-conversational tone that prevents the book from feeling like a chore to read. Keep in mind, this book doesn't delve too far into the more advanced stages of the game - but from a beginner's perspective, I would consider this to be an absolute must-read for anyone that is new to chess whom may want a headstart. Definitely worth checking out!

Great buy!
A very good selection if you are just beginning or getting back into chess after many years of not playing. I have purchased other books which were supposed to be easy to read and understandable for the beginner or amateur. I was disappointed with all except this one. I definitely recommend this book.

NOT for beginner Chess players. Repeat, NOT for Beginners.
How to Play Chess for Beginners has a simple, beginner checkmate on page 18. Ohhh, getting into checkmate, very good! A 2 move mate. 4 pages later the author dives into mate in 11. This is on page 22. Hmm, how quickly beginners advance. Read on kids. On page 24, beginners are to grok a 16 move checkmate. Afterwards, some basic, named openings are covered, which is fine. Then opening traps follow which seems like a reasonable follow up to openings. But, here is one that is yet again 16 moves deep. Middle game examples and advice follows and end game thereafter. The book concludes. I cannot recommend this book. I believe it is inappropriately titled, verging on deceptive advertising. There is a short puzzle section at the very tail end, ahhh, 7 moves deep.
