🎭 Saint JoanPlay by George Bernard Shaw➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖Today, I completed reading Saint Joan, which is a play by George Bernard Shaw.The play was premiered in 1923, three years after canonization of Joan of Arc. Canonization is the official admission of a dead person into sainthood.Joan of Arc, a village girl born in Vosage, France.Important timelines:1412 - Born1431 - Burnt alive by Church1456 - Church accepts its mistake. Sentence is dismissed. (Thought they can't unburn her now).1904 - Designated as Honourable (It took 4 centuries, for church to realise)1908 - Declared blessed1920 - Declared SaintPlay tells us the story of a girl whoes ego is rushing towards freedom. At the age of 16 years, Joan decides to free the french land from the english occupation. She calls it Gods will. Joan says God talks to me through voices of saint Catherine, saint Margaret. These voices of god are available to everyone one but others dont listen. Church takes it as a insult and charges her of blasphemy.This play once again tells story of Little men(झुन्नुलाल), how little men act when they encounter greatness. They can't stand it. Little men in this play are Big little men (बड़े झुन्नुलाल).Sparking lines from the play(there are many, listing few here):~ We want a few mad people now. See where the sane ones have landed us!~ Our soldiers are always beaten because they are fighting only to save their skins; and the shortest way to save your skin is to run away.~ Half an hour to burn you, dear Saint, and four centuries to find out the truth about you!~ If you could bring her back to life, they would burn her again within six months, for all their present adoration of her~ O God that madest this beautiful earth, when will it be ready to receive Thy saints? How long, O Lord, how long?________I have watched Marathi and hindi theatre plays in person, but it was first time I read a play instead of watching, and the author was able to create the world through his words.The maple classic publication also provides a 50 page preface before play. Unfortunately mapple classic have not made the kindle version available.For ease of reading I would recommend reading from Kindle, or reading in Hindi, as I had to reach the dictionary multiple times, while reading.

Good quality and must read when you are a literature lover.

Book is fine as expected but the bright side is the introduction that gives a entire background of St Jones
