Perhaps the best tool purchase I've ever made
UPDATE April 2020:I'm putting this update in front of the others because I believe it's that significant. About 3 months before the end of the 4 year warranty, I took the saw to a Greenworks certified service center(one they recommended) to have the sprocket replaced. I mentioned that the oil wasn't flowing very well. I was up to about 6 battery cycles before having to refill the reservoir. The service guy agreed there wasn't much oil coming out so he drained it, blew out the line and refilled. He said it might be a little better so I continued using it. The problem got worse, to the point where the saw would stop running for no obvious reason. It was up to 10 battery cycles before needing more oil. I tried manually oiling the chain with an oil can to be sure the lack of oil and frequency of cutting off were related. It was, but not enough to keep the saw running as it should. I figured after cutting about 13 cords of wood plus who knows how much other pruning and such, I had just worn it out. It was about 6 weeks before the end of the warranty period so I called Greenworks to see what they would say. I didn't even finish explaining everything I was experiencing with the saw when I was placed on hold. When the woman returned, she asked me to please dispose of my saw however was appropriate for my area as Greenworks would be sending me a new one. About a week later it arrived. Not just the unit, but complete with bar and chain. This was the 5th or 6th time I had called Greenworks over the 4 year period. I found them to be friendly and helpful every time. And obviously, in this case, I couldn't have asked for anything more. Now I'm changing the rating from 4 to 5 stars, and I would give them 6 if I could.OriginalI've been cutting an average of 4 cords of firewood for 36 years. I have used just about every brand of gas powered saw at one time or another. I've gotten fed up with today's 2 cycle engines to the point where I've gone to battery and electric for blowers and trimmers. Now trying to do the same with the chainsaw. So I decided to try the 80v with 18" bar and 2 AH battery. The first thing I did was read the owner's manual (yep, my wife was surprised too). I didn't want to make a stupid $300 mistake. Somewhat out of curiosity, I removed the cover, bar and chain. I oiled the bar and chain upon replacing and adjusted the tensioner. With a fully charged battery I went at it. Started easy with small limbs that didn't require splitting. I got 83 cuts with the first battery charge and 87 with the second. Not exactly the 150 cuts Greenworks claims. I've now had 8 sessions, cutting red oak logs up to a 20' diameter (only 1 that size). I've cut quite a bit in the 8 to 16" range (all oak). Now I'll backtrack a little. I have 4 acres of woods with house, workshop and shed near the middle so I'm never far away from electricity. My mode of cutting is to run the saw out of gas, set it aside, split everything that needs splitting, gather the wood onto a small trailer, pull it (with lawn tractor) to my piles, unload and stack (repeat as necessary). Then hope the saw will start again with a fresh tank of gas. My trailer is called a 10 CF but if you measure the bed and do the math it's 7.5 CF. So a rounded trailer load I estimate to be 9 CF. My minimum requirement for this battery powered saw was to cut at least a trailer load so I could keep busy during the 30 minute recharge cycle. Well, it has done that with every cutting session. The range has been from just barely a trailer load when cutting the small stuff up to almost 2 trailer loads when cutting the perfect logs. Perfect for me was 6 - 14" diameter well dried oak where the density has decreased but is still great for firewood. By comparison, I average 2 1/2 to 3 trailer loads with any of the gas saws I've used in the past. Even though the saw has met my minimum requirements I'm not giving it 5 stars because of either the yield per charge or the total cost. If either the cost was 25-30% less or my yield was 25-30% more it would get 5. I do think this saw will handle 60-70% of my need thus reducing my reliance on the gas saw. It works for my situation but maybe not for everyone. I hope this review will help you decide. If anything changes significantly, I will update.Update 4/16/17: Now I've used this saw for just over a year and have cut over 5 cords of hardwood. As it turned out, I never cranked up the old gas saw. I even dropped and bucked a 26" diameter oak with this saw. All with the original 2AH battery, bar and chain. While I'm very pleased with the saw, I still won't give it 5 stars for the following reasons:Like others mention, the oil reservoir leaks,The oil cap cross threads so easily and so often that it started popping off while running. I did find out that some caps from quarts of motor oil have the same threads. I punched a small air hole in the top and have been using it for a couple of months now. No cross threading and no popping off. Go figure,And the "string" that keeps you from losing the oil cap could be stiffer so it will feed back into the reservoir more easily. But now that I'm using motor oil caps that's no biggie as I have an endless supply.I'd like to see the bucking teeth be a little longer. Often, they don't grab as well as I would like,Last but not least is the price. I see it has gone up rather than down over the past year. I might not have given this thing a try at the current $324 price. And though I'm very interested in the blower and string trimmer, I can't justify the current $378 price for the combo.UPDATE: 10/1/17. Update of sorts. Amazon ran a one day sale on the 80V blower and trimmer(one included a 2AH battery and charger that I couldn't resist. So I did pony up. So far pretty good. I'll be reviewing those products separately very soon.

Best chainsaw I ever owned
I bought this because we have 50 acres with a bunch of medium to large trees that are always having limbs break that need to be cut up. I own a small 20 V electric chainsaw, and I have absolutely loved using that but cannot handle anything bigger than 8 inches wide. I have owned gas chainsaws in the past, and I have absolutely hated them. They leak oil, they smell like crap, they are way too loud and they in general extremely unreliable. I bought this chainsaw because I had such good luck with my little Electric one I figured why not get a nice big electric chainsaw, and since I already own Greenworks products, reliable and well-made. I figured when I first got the saw OK it’ll be quieter but it’ll probably be slower and heat through batteries pretty quickly which I was already prepared for because I have a bunch of 80 V batteries but after using this thing the first day, oh my God! I fell in love! This chainsaw is so easy to use and the battery life is excellent even with the 2Ah battery. I typically run out of energy before the chainsaw does. This chainsaw runs a little bit slower than a gas chainsaw but anytime you might spend cutting a little bit longer is easily made up in the fact that you don’t have to mix gas and oil fiddle around with a carburetor or a pole start being said this chainsaw goes through stuff pretty quick, and I have yet to have it stall on me and I have cut a pretty large tree with it as seen in the photos. This chainsaw with the battery equipped is slightly heavier than a gas equivalent, but it’s barely noticeable to me, and this thing won’t vibrate your hands to kingdom. Come like a guess one. I’ve heard people complain about the fact. This thing leaks oil, but that has not been the case with me apart from the residual oil that is on the bar when you’re done using it and honestly you won’t find a chainsaw that doesn’t leak from time to time. I’ve also heard some people show dislike for the auto off feature, which in my opinion is nice to have because you don’t want the chainsaw on for very long unattended and turning it back on is literally as easy as just clicking a little button right next to the trigger so that is not a problem at all for me. The only thing I might say I’m not too much of a fan of is the fact that the bar is so skinny , but that comes with positives and negatives. The posit is that it has a bit of flex and when you’re cutting so if you get hung up, it’s a bit easier to free it and so far only negative with it is that it might make it a little bit easier to derail the chain , but considering the chain never gets hot like a chainsaw you can take the little tool out of the back of the chainsaw and take the cover off realign the chain and put it back on within a minute. Don’t hesitate to get this because it really is a night and day difference from using a gas chainsaw. You can use this anytime of the day and not piss off your neighbors and it’s in general a lot more fun to use because you’re not worrying about dealing with all the hassle of a gas chainsaw so you can just pick it up put a battery in it and go to work. I would definitely buy this again!
