Entertaining collection of where expressions come from
I've often wondered where these expressions came from so I enjoyed reading this book. Found the historical origin of the everyday expressions to be enlightening.

Turns out Cooper is a super pooper.
"What Does That Mean" by someone with the nom de plume Cooper the Pooper is a well written clear and simple book about the origins of various idioms, phrases, and expressions. This is an excellent book for children, adults learning English as a second language, and everyone who has curiosity about the quirks and oddities of our language. The author traces some idioms back as far as Greek and Roman times. He often offers speculation or conjectures about where a chosen expression comes from. One critic here on Amazon disliked the book because he felt that Cooper's explanations are not fact based. I, on the other hand, applaud Cooper for his thoughtful speculations. I do not see the absence of rigorous scientific empirical hard data as a problem. So I wholeheartedly recommend the book for the three cohorts I name above. PS. I'd like to see Cooper choose a new pseudonym that doesn't involve excrement.
