A good way to start
This short biography is a good way to get started in ancient military history. Namely the exploits and conquests of one of the greatest military leaders in history: Alexander the Great. History buffs already know this but newcomers after reading this, will realize that history is proof that nothing is impossible. Such things as logic and reason matter little when it comes to human ambition and willpower. People like Alexander come every once in a while. They are giants not because of their wealth or power they wield. Neither it's their ancestry. Rather it is what they project and the people they inspire. Alexander likely knew he would become a cult figure. And that legend remains because even when we know most of the history behind the legend, we still are in awe of him. After all, few could have done what he did. Used their wisdom, boldness, guile, and willpower to turn the odds in their favor.

The ‘Great’ is well deserved
This book chronicles the life and activities of Alexander the Great from the time immediately before his birth, until his death when his empire began to be dismantled. The author has done a good job recounting the chronology and geography of Alexander’s conquests, both in battle and politically. He also outlines Alexander’s physical characteristics, beliefs and personality traits. Much of what has been written is difficult to verify, but Holmquist is quite open about how much credence can be placed in the specifics that are listed. There is even a separate section in the book devoted solely to the myths that have become attributed to Alexander. The author includes pictures and sculpture to help the reader appreciate Alexander the Great and his great accomplishments. This is an excellent book to begin to learn about a singular man of ancient times.

Too brief, no depth
Seems to rush through Alexander’s brief life, skipping details of his formative years and more importantly his military campaigns. The description of his death was only a few paragraphs long. Perhaps the details are lost in history, but for the man who toppled the Persian Empire I think a bit more detail would have been appreciated.

Alexander the Great A Wonderful Book
The author vividly traces the history of Alexander the Great. He presents his great strategic mind and his contributions to Greece and Asia. Alexander the Great successfully managed to unite Greece except for the Spartans and create a powerful Hellenic Empire that reached parts of India. He was the only leader who successfully controlled Afghanistan. The book vividly immortalizes the accomplishments of Alexander the Great.

An incredibly interesting man, very well researched.
For such a well known historic name, I knew very little about him. This was a well researched and amazing story. There was so much information it was almost too much. My one and only issue is, it was not as easy to read and follow as the other Captivation History books. I felt it for a little bogged down in the back story and details. Still a great read though and many love that level of detail.
