Yes it's LOUD (and lovely)!
Web reviews about whistles are difficult to do because digital cameras tend to clip loud sounds. After watching quite a few, I decided on the Fox 40 Sharx because of one wilderness guide who tried to test various whistles, grumbled about the lousy audio fidelity of his videos, and said that among all whistles, he keeps returning to the Sharx for everyday carry. So when my blue-and orange model arrived, I went behind our condo unit to test it while my wife remained in the screened porch one floor above me. When I blew the whistle out over the woods behind us, I could definitely hear it through the padded stereo earphones that I wore for protection. And when I went back upstairs, she grimaced slightly and said, "Yep... It's loud!" She wanted LOUD for emergency use and also liked the size and design of the thing. So she's now looking forward to getting her own purple-and-green version! Just be aware that pealess whistles emit a shriek whose loudness depends solely on how much air you blow through them. So in an emergency, blow HAAAAARRRRRD... you can't be timid with pealess whistles. (But don't blow them near someone's ears unless they're trying to do you harm!)

Loud and Effective
Be prepared it is LOUD! We bought this whistle years ago and it is still going strong. We use it to call our dogs and they can hear it from anywhere on our four acre+ property. The noise it makes is extremely loud but that is what makes it so affective. I have even used it to call in the kids a time or two.

Glory Be This Is Loud!
Bought this whistle to officiate games in South Korea. Dang this whistle is loud! And I don't have to blow with much effort at all. It is so loud it stops action, grabs people's attention, and makes your presence to others immediately known. Best whistle for officiating I've ever had!

i love it, kids hate it
its so loud, took a long time to regulate by breath to make a noise that didn't rupture my students' eardrums, but I got it down now and it works great for phy ed

Gets the job done!
Good whistle, but not as orange as the picture shows (much more red). Disappointed in the color but not worth the effort of returning.

Loud but bigger than expected
This whistle is very loud and will shred eardrums. I cover my ears before I blow it to prevent hearing damage. I every day carry it EDC. However because it is much larger than I anticipated about an 3/4 inch thick and 2 inches long, I will be looking for something smaller.I think I will try the Jet Scream, at first I was leery of buying it because of the mixed reviews but now I believe the problem some Jet Scream reviewers faced was due to the way they are blowing it. After trying the Sharx which seems to have a similar design. I now know you must put you lips over the whistle to get the proper airflow. If you press your lips against the surface and blow it does not work properly. So I guess I will order one and find out for myself.Good luck,Matthew

It's a blast!
Plug your ears before you blow this thing. Seriously, it's screaming loud. I love to teach Morse Code to hoary marmots with my Fox 40 Sharx. So far, they seems to be partial to the letters T and M. I'm trying for R and C. When I'm hiking, the Sharx is always with me. I carry another one with my car keys in case in an emergency I need to direct traffic. Check out the variety of available colors.

Five Stars
This is a very loud whistle and easy to blow. It is comfortable to blow into it as well.
