Exactly what we needed
Our village recently added composting to our garbage pickup to keep compostable materials out of the landfill. While they provided a large bin that we keep outside, we needed something small to keep in the kitchen to hold compostable material temporarily. This has worked out perfectly for us. It's large enough that it can hold over a days worth and easily fits on our kitchen counter. The lid easily stays open while scooping in scraps and closes with just a tap, and sturdy handle makes it easy to carry to the big bin, and it's easy to clean. While this will work well with compostable bags, we've been using it bagless. So far we haven't had any issues with odor or bugs, but we tend to empty it out and rinse it out at least every other day, so nothing really stays long enough to cause a problem. This has helped us make a smooth transition to separating our compostable material instead of using the garbage disposal or putting it in our normal trash.

Don’t bother with any other brand-BUY OXO!
I have tried other countertop compost buckets. None can beat this one. It is made from quality material. A lot of other brands are flimsy and have inconvenient lids. This OXO compost bucket is easy to open and easy to clean. When this one gets too old (my last one lasted well over 5 years- and the only reason I replaced it was because it did start to stain a bit on the inside) I will purchase this one again.

NYC Mandatory Composting
I have a pied a terre in New York City and mandatory composting of food waste is now the rule. It really isn’t as complicated as I expected. Our building purchased a freezer that’s in the service elevator hallway, and residents are instructed to use biodegradable compost bags to dispose of their food scraps. I bought this compost bin that fits in one of my three freezer drawers and line it with a compost bag. When full and the food is frozen, I bring the tied bag to the basement and dispose of it in the building’s freezer. On designated days, the building porters move the contents of the freezer to the curb for city disposal. This bin in my freezer keeps the scraps tidy and sanitary…and not so attractive to rodents.

Still very small but much better than the smallest one
I ordered the smallest one first and something told me to look at the next size up and ordered that too but not in time to arrive the same day. It's very hard to tell, even from my or other people's pictures how small these really are. They are small!! Even though they look almost the same at first glance, the slightly larger one is def better. If you break down the price difference, it's definitely worth getting the larger one. The smaller one does not have a pull up lip to keep the garbage bag in place, not that you can't fold it over the edge. I have to say, in all my years of traveling, the small one is like a very small hotel room ice bucket. The next larger size up doesn't look much different, it really just has the height of the bag lip/rim but it is slightly larger. Some people said they put the small one in the fridge which I would never do because that real estate is too precious to me! But I put this on a box for now until I come up with something more creative because if there's food in it I don't want to take any chance of bugs/ants etc. getting in it. Even for a single person household the small one is ridiculously small in my opinion but not just mine because the first one I got was a return. I could tell by the missing & half covered packaging compared to the second one. Still I think overpriced but attractive enough & considering I really need to compost more items (and everyone says it keeps out the smells) I will give this a chance. The food scraps I throw in my garbage now can be unbearable even though the garbage comes every week. Other reviews of other small composting bins talked about filters that eventually fruit flies may have laid eggs in which I found disturbing as well as ventilation holes which why would you do that?! If there are any issues with this I will come back to this review. At the same time I ordered the 2 gallon clear HOMMALY bags and they fit perfect.

No odors when lid is closed, perfectly sized.
Perfectly designed for easy cleaning. Lid really keeps odors in until ready for replacing the liner bag. And the best part for those of us where plastic is permitted with the compost (NYC) is that the free veggie bags from the supermarket fit perfectly, saving the expense and mess of the green compostable bags. I’ve had mine for 3 years and it still looks like new.

TINY ANT PROOF, ATTRACTIVE DESIGN, FUNCTIONS W/OXO EXCELLENCE
I chose the smaller size, and it is perfect for fit and capacity for my needs. It holds plenty, as much as my larger one for winter does. Best of all it fits very nicely and unobtrusively into my countertop multi-use space that includes a toaster, a mixer, a Mason jar cat waterer, cleaning supply holders for brushes and sponges, and a croock for cooking utensils, and leaves me enough space to prepare food!

Useful. Easy to use & a good size for small kitchen
A great size for 2 people ( in my case).I only need one hand to open the lid, which stays up, & also there is a handle so I can carry it while bringing down garbage sometimes.Overall Im very happy with my purchase.

I am way more thrilled about this than I should be
I love this little scrap bucket. For years, I have just collected kitchen scraps in a bowl in the sink. This bucket is a more efficient use of space as it fits nicely in the corner of the sink. The lid pops off and on easily and it cleans up nicely in the dishwasher.
