Surprisingly powerful and Linux compatible
TLDR: The Minisforum UM790 Pro is a great little device with excellent Linux compatibility and surprisingly strong gaming chops for its price point. Recommended.I purchased the 64GB version of the UM790 Pro and I've had it for about two weeks. I've been happy with it so far.I run Kubuntu Linux on mine and I have not had any problems. Installation was a breeze with no unusual steps required. All ports seem to be working out of the box.I primarily use my UM790 Pro for web development and general productivity, and it excels at both. I switch between workspaces often and I keep multiple applications open at all times. No issues.I've tried a few games just to see how this little device handles them. It's pretty impressive for the price point. Wrath of the Righteous runs well at 1080P on medium settings and I suspect BG3 would be about the same. Older games and indie games run as smooth as you could ask for. Skull Girls runs like a dream, and I played Grim Dawn. At 2K on high. I could probably make 4K work if I wanted to spend some time optimizing the settings but, honestly, on a 27 inch monitor 2K is fine. So, is it comparable to a full tower with a 4060? No, of course not. But for it's size and price point I'm completely satisfied with the gaming performance of the UM790 Pro.I was concerned about fan noise on this machine when I bought it and I'd read mixed reviews. I'fe found it to be basically silent during normal operation and coding work. The fan does kick on during gaming and it's noticable but not excessive. The UM790 Pro offers a lot of value for the dollar and I'd recommend it to anyone in the market for a good Mini PC.

Powerful little guy works great for animators
Got my PC yesterday, I was so excited it felt like Christmas. The packaging was nice and set up was easy. I have a 3 monitor set up, had no issues connecting it to my monitors. I did experience issues connecting it to my KVM switch, but I haven’t isolated the issue so it could be my switch.I purchased the PC for animation. I use programs like Blender, After Effects, Adobe Character Animator, and Premiere pro. I’ve been struggling running the programs on my latitude 7240 and decided it was time to invest in an upgrade. The programs run so smooth on this mini PC, I could cry lol. the attached image is my CPU and GPU utilization while streaming a Wnba game and animating in blender. Needless to say the PC is unbothered. I imported a few large HQ 3D objects in blender to get an idea of how much this PC can handle. On my old laptop I couldn’t even display them in render view without blender crashing. On this mini PC they open smoothly and I can switch to material and render view effortlessly.i did run into 1 issue today. I was doing some very light work in Blender and all of a sudden the PC restarted. afterward I couldn’t open blender or the AMD performance monitoring software (it was saying it didn’t support my graphics card, which obviously isn’t the case since I had it running pre restart. both issues were indicative or a graphics card issue. I ended up updating the driver and problem solved. It reminded me to purchase the warranty though. I’ve worked in IT for almost 14 years and although I can tackle a lot of stuff myself, I know it’s always worth it to purchase protection. You never know what could happen. So far, i’m extremely happy with my purchase. I will update my review if I run into problems or in a few weeks/months.

Fantastic device, accompanied by no support and quick failure
UPDATE 08/06/2024If I could take away the one star, I would. I've been using the computer regularly for 3 months, and now the USB-C port on the front has died. I had a small hub connected to it that gave me 3 USB-A ports, and SD card slot, a micro-SD slot (which I use a lot), and an HDMI port (how I overcome the faulty DP port (see below). The hub has a short cable so I must plug it into the front to reach it. This computer is quickly becoming unusable. I highly recommend avoiding this brand and go with something like Beelink that has much better support (and better hardware).ORIGINAL REVIEWI purchased this computer a few months ago to replace a small gaming computer I had for over 6 years that was having some trouble. I love the small form factor, and this model received many glowing reviews on YouTube and several other places. While I am not a heavy gamer, having the Oculink port on this mini PC is a nice assurance that if I do want to add a graphic card to it, I have that option.I immediately downgraded the OS to Windows 10 and had no trouble doing this as the drivers were available on Minisforum's website, then dual-booted it with Manjaro Linux as I slowly make the transition away from Windows. Still no trouble. The computer is responsive, quiet, and cool with the fans enclosed. Even if I push it and the fans spin up, they are not too loud. I also love that it's small enough to place directly on my desk so that I can easily access both the front and back of it. The LED feature is a nice touch, but I don't have the space on my desk to use it.Overall, it's a great computer that lets me play games, do some graphic work, and all of my day-to-day tasks without hesitation. However, I now have to caution any buyers of this product that you are on your own if you have any issues with this. I initially had it set up using a single display. Once I made space for it on my primary desk and wanted to connect it to my second monitor, the trouble started. Basically, the Display Port (DP) does not work. At all. This was 5 months after purchasing, so outside of the return window. I tried everything I could think to do, including updating drivers directly from AMD, trying 3 different cables (my monitors only have HDMI, so this did involve a converter), using the DP port without the HDMI, and double-checking all internal connections. I contacted Minisforum via their support email on their website. I received a very quick response, but it basically said, in very broken English, "many customers have this issue, so don't use the Display Port".Fortunately, I had a USB-C docking station with an HDMI port on it, so I plugged this in and have been able to use two displays as planned. I occasionally have an issue when the computer wakes from sleep where this docking station does not reconnect, so I have to disconnect and reconnect the cable, but it works as intended after that.I will update this review if I get any further with my contact with Minisforum, but as of now, I can only recommend this computer if you are comfortable with the lack of support.
