I absolutely loved this.
My grandma was a Catholic. I grew up going to the church. But for me, it was the music and the ceremonios pageantry of the Easter mass that I loved about the church. Although I don't go to church on Sunday s anymore, I have made it my life's work to visit Catholic Churches of every country that I visit. There's something special about the how the Catholic Churches were built and how they make you feel when you walk in. Finding this book and reading about the ups and down the church has experienced makes me all the more drawn to it. I'm definitely going to read more about the church and visit places of importance that have shaped the church as we know it today. Thank you for writing this abbreviated history of the church. It's very detailed, insightful, and interesting.

A nice history lesson
A nice history lesson, although a bit boring and at times my eyes were glazed over, but what history lesson doesn’t have a bit of that. I married into a Catholic family in 1995 but never really took the time to learn any more than the basics and mass Mtiquette. I’m glad I read it and look forward to checking out the other historical books put out by Captivating History.

I learned a lot about the history the Catholic Church and the culture that surrounds it. I will use this information as I prepare to teach a class on early church history.

I really enjoy the Captivating History books. This is no exception. So much knowledge in a minum number of pages. Did you know Jesus only preached for 3 years. Really explains the history of the Catholic Church.

Found the early history of the Catholic church to be disturbing but interesting. Glad I read this lesson. Joe Taylor.

Catholic History but with some parts missing
One curious thing about the Catholic faith is that its adherents do not profess to be the one true religion, as certain other world religions do. Nonetheless, through religious syncretism, conquests, and leadership of strong individuals, the Catholic Church grew to be the leaders of Christianity. Until checked by Papal schisms (at one time or another, there were two or three popes simultaneously holding the same office), the Great Reformation, and changes in worldview, the Catholic Church arguably became the most powerful institutions in the world. Wracked by abuses of power then until now, the Church is learning from its mistakes, is open to reform, and attempting to be more relevant in modern times. I like the artistic interpretations of church events sprinkled throughout the book. Although there is much ground covered in this short book, I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of attention to such events as the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition (although of the latter, no-one expects it). Despite that, this is one book that I will keep referring to.

A lot of history in 200 pages...
Captivating History captures two thousand years of history in two hundred pages. It starts with the dual nature of Jesus, the divine one and the human one. The history notes that Jesus himself wrote nothing of his ideas and teachings so all the history and ideas are written by others. Six pages in all are used to recount the life of Jesus and then the history steps into the Age of the Apostles when the faith evolved into an institution that eventually became the Catholic Church. The Church followed the path of the Roman Empire, and its authority became parallel to the reach of the Roman Empire and remained after the Empire fell. The publication describes the structure of the church and some of the unique elements such as monasteries. It also spends some time recounting the lives of some who eventually were recognized as saints. Captivating History also speaks of some political leaders who either supported or opposed the church. The publication is remarkable in its span of time and its content.
