I found a treasure
I read and loved The Lottery many years ago in high school literature class. I loved it. I saw the 1963 movie The Haunting and loved it. I thought to myself, I really must seek out more or Shirley Jackson's work. Many years have gone by filled with work, family and all the ups and downs life has to offer. I recently viewed the old 1963 movie The Haunting and loved it all over again. I remembered I had wanted to read and know more of Shirley Jackson's work. I found this book. It allowed me to re-read The Lottery. I still love it. It allowed me to read the original story of The Haunting of Hill House. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is nothing like reading the story as it was told by the author rather than via a movie. Back then books made into movies often lacked much of the original story. The 1963 version actually did a pretty good job of capturing the important elements of the orginal story. This book included another novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a masterpiece of mystery, intrigue and suspense. Lastly, I was treated to many of her best short stories. Each one artfully executed. She takes ordinary people, in everyday situations and weaves tales of suspense and horror. I was so glad I purchased this book. I was delighted to have finally gotten around to reading more of Shirley Jackson's work. I look forward to finding more of her treasures.

Everything a reader of her will want in one book
This is a great collection in a manageable size. The text isn't too small, which happens in collections like this sometimes, and it is laid out well.

I liked the book fairly well
I liked the book fairly well, but her writing is somewhat dated so it read slowly for me. Other than that I found her collected works o.k.

Love
Jackson is an amazing author who spins webs of mystery and suspense. I love the surprise endings. I was introduced to Jackson years ago in college English with The Lottery.

Scary!
The scariest story ever written. My sister had read this years ago and she hadn't read it in a long time and I bought it for her on her birthday. She loved having the book.
