Classic ESL text
I've been an ESL teacher for eight years. The Side By Side series seems to be a classic. Colored cartoons and language models guide students to form English dialogues. Once they have grasped the basic conversation, they have to form new versions of it over and over. The combination of repetitive exercises with slight changes (swapping one verb for another, for example) can go on for a long while. I used this series pretty often to get my low-level students talking.A few things I don't love: some of the references are dated (VCR, fax machine) and the cartoons can be a little unserious. Some students don't understand that the dialogues are the way people actually talk. But for language practice, they're effective.
