The Magic of Flexagons: Manipulative Paper Puzzles to Cut Out and Make Paperback – January 1, 2008

No blank templates. Sort of feel like I wasted $9.99. I guess this is why the book is out of print.

You can't go wrong with this. This has the flexagons ready to be cut out, on very nice, easily foldable paper. The author has three "practice" flexagons so you can make mistakes on them, before you create the nicer flexagons Mr. Mitchell has printed with pretty designs on them. I'm not sure 4 - 8 is the right age range for this book, but I'm not an expert on that. Flexagons are lots of fun, and this is an easy way to get into them. (Reading this may prepare you to read FLEXAGONS INSIDE AND OUT, but I found I still couldn't understand the directions in that book even after reading this one.)

Unless you are already well versed on the "magic" of flexagons you should NOT buy this book. The directions for the various puzzles are written very poorly. It's easier for a novice like me to figure out the flexagons than to figure out the directions, which are not even all in one place. A poorly organized book. This is the only disappointing thing I have ever purchased from Amazon If I could give it no stars at all, that's what I would do!

If you or your kids enjoy science puzzles, toys like Jacob's Ladder, love doing origami, or just liked making those little paper "fortune tellers" in school -- this is a great book for you -- flexagons are fun, fascinating and combine aspects of math and art -- youtube videos give tips on how to flex them if you've never seen one in action -- but this book gives many colorful cut-out templates to make fast flexagons.

I was looking around the web for this but it was too hard, but luckly I found this on Amazon.com and bought it as soon as possible. This is the best book I have seen of flexagons the temlate are there and they have thick paper template which help it last plus it has template to practice on. Also the directions are good and understandable.

I love the book, but the printing is off so the fronts and backs of the pages do not line up which makes most of the book unusable. :(

Simple Tetraflexagon, Two-Way Tetraflexagon, Hidden Aces Flexagon, Two Simple Hexaflexagons (Star Hexaflexagon, Kaleidoscope Hexaflexagon), Colour Mix Hexaflexagon, Double Cross Flexagon, Magic Square Flexagon, Flexitube, Double Layer Flexitube, Harlequin Flexagon.Flexagons ... das ist Papiermagie, so eine Art Zauberwürfel aus Papier zum Selbermachen. Der Begriff wurde 1939 von einem jungen Engländer namens Arthur Stone während seines Mathematikstudiums an der Princetown University in den USA geprägt. Er bezeichnete damit eine neue Art von Spielzeug aus gefaltetem Papier, welches an einer oder mehreren Stellen zusammengeklebt wird, so dass man durch Bewegung eine neue Oberfläche zum Vorschein bringen kann. Stones ursprüngliches Flexagon findet sich in diesem Buch auf Seite 9 als sogenanntes "Simple Hexaflexagon" in zwei Variationen.In diesem Heft sind insgesamt zehn verschiedene Flexagonarten zum Selberbasteln enthalten. Manchmal gibt es mehrere Variationen. Man kann die Vorlagen entweder direkt ausschneiden, falten und kleben oder man kopiert Vorder- und Rückseite und nimmt dann die Kopie zum Basteln (Format des Heftes entspricht DINA4). Alternativ kann man natürlich auch die Maße auf ein leeres Blatt Papier übernehmen und die Oberfläche selber farbig gestalten.Die Anleitungen zur Herstellung sind auf sogenannten "Datafile Cards" im Innenbereich des Heftes enthalten. Dort wird auf der Vorderseite in Wort und Bild gezeigt wie es geht. Des Weiteren wird die Aufgabe beschrieben, die es zu bewältigen gilt. Auf der Rückseite gibt es Lösungstipps (in Wort und Bild), falls man komplett ratlos ist.Was die englische Sprache betrifft, so fand ich den Inhalt gut verständlich, zumal neben dem Text auch Skizzen in der Bastelanleitung vorhanden sind. Faltlinien sind in den Vorlagen schraffiert eingezeichnet. Schnittlinien haben einen durchgezogenen Strich. Klebepunkte sind durch identische Buchstaben gekennzeichnet.Und wer nach dem Ausprobieren aller Flexagons nach neuen Herausforderungen sucht, der findet auf der letzten Seite Anregungen wie man die zugrundeliegende Systematik untersuchen kann, um dann vielleicht eigene Flexagons zu entwerfen.Mein Fazit:Selber habe ich die kopierten Vorlagen ausgeschnitten und weiter verarbeitet. Alles problemlos und super einfach. Der Spaßfaktor beim Knobeln, wie man die gestellte Aufgabe dann löst, war hoch. Alles in Allem hat sich dieser Kauf also gelohnt.

There is more to this than meets the eye. It is difficult. I had something like this while growing up, and it got destroyed in a fire. I loved it. It takes patience, you have to approach it carefully. There are hint cards, and a set of cards that describe the folding techniques. There are two other sets of paper folding techniques similiar to these, out there do not hesitate to purchase them you will not be disapointed.
