Small Signal Audio Design 2nd Edition

This is the second edition of Small Signal Design. It's a fascinating book if you are interested in electronic design in the audio field. Mr. Self has included very through explanations of transistor and op amp circuits related to small signal audio design. He explains how circuits work and which characteristics of circuits are important. He builds many of the circuits to prove out theory and his simulations. He then explains the use of these circuits in various pieces of electronic equipment.This latest edition has a lot more material on design of circuitry that interfaces with for example; phone cartridges. I'm not interested in designing such circuitry, but I still found those sections very interesting and worthwhile, because they added to my overall knowledge of design. This latest edition must be at least 100 pages longer than the first edition, which I also own, and the added pages are very valuable.I use the knowledge I have gained from Mr. Self's books to better understand audio equipment and to help decide which equipment is well designed. These aren't easy subjects and a couple of readings of the books are required; but, I've found that after reading this book and Mr. Self's book on power amplifiers, I can often look pictures of circuits boards from various pieces of equipment, or the circuit boards themselves, and have an excellent idea of their actual circuitry. I can reference datasheets from say op amps, and tell which ones have better specifications for a particular application. That means Mr. Self is doing a great job of educating me; with some work on my part!If you enjoy the technical part of audio, especially electronics, this a wonderful book. I also enjoy Mr. Self's humor which makes the material much more interesting.

This is one of those rare technical books which are well-written and serve as an in-depth bridge between theory and practice. It's very nice to have around if you've got an electrical engineering background and are getting back into audio circuit design. It reminds me of Walter Jung's book "Op Amp Applications Handbook," Analog Devices, 2005, although Self is a bit less gentle with the reader. I love the jabs regarding the "Audiophile" community (see also "Science and subjectivism" in chapter 1 of Self's "Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook; really nice).

Just didn't know what it was called... This is a comprehensive text book style explanation of everything you could ever want to know about pro audio design and build. I have already changed one build I'm in the middle of after reading the chapter on mixers. Just great information all around.

An extremely comprehensive treatise on small signal audio design (as you'd expect from the title). Unfortunately it's about 10 years old, so some of the material is a bit dated. For example, Mr. Self's review of opamps doesn't include newer, much higher performance offerings. Also, the chapter on raw DC supplies lacks many enhancements identified by the online DIY community in the last ten years. Finally, Mr. Self seems obsessed with parts cost. As a DIYer who's only building one unit, that's not an important consideration for me. Despite the issues I have with the book, after reading it I was able to improve the sound of my DIY phono preamp which, in the end, is what counts. BTW, it is my understanding that the third edition of this includes minimal updates and some of the existing material has been removed and transferred to a different title.

A clearly explained and illustrated text. With a couple exciting professional audio design projects in the works, I couldn't put the book down, it was so helpful. It’s earned a spot on my technical library along side other luminaries, e.g, Olson, Jung, Holman, Blauert, Toole, Rayleigh (Strutt), and 40yr of AES journals.

A gift to my husband who is an electronics buff. He says it is full of good information and is referring to it. Good sellers, fast shipping, well packaged. Recommended highly.

Like all of Douglas Self's books, a model of clarity. Good explanations, good pictures, good measurements and simulations that well illustrate the principles. In addition, his light tone and occasional bits of humor make reading it quite pleasant.

I was hoping to find out much more schematic example in it, this is why Im giving it 4 stars.However, this is a great book with good explanation, easy too read for those who are already familiarwith electronics. Everything goes straight to the point.

Acquistato per studiare più a fondo gli amplificatori di segnali, non trovando informazioni superiori sui libri di scuola. Questo manuale è una cosa impressionante, pieno di nozioni su tutto ciò che riguarda gli amplificatori di segnale, feedback e tutto quello che riguarda l'argomento. Se volete andare a fondo sugli amplificatori, anche audio, questo è il libro che vi serve. Assolutamente non per neofiti, serve un minimo di base di elettronica, ovviamente.

Ich hatte erst überlegt, dieses Buch in englischer Sprache zu kaufen. Das Buch ist fachlich auf höchstem Niveau und sehr praxisnah beschrieben. Ich habe den Kauf nicht bereut. Die Aufteilung in viele Kapitel erleichtern den Einstieg in die recht komplexe Thematik.Egal ob Einsteiger, der nur mal einen Verstärker dimensionieren will, oder der Profi, welcher das technisch machbare aus einem Design herausholen will wird in diesem Buch fündig.Besonders die Kapitel zur Erläuterung der recht komplexen Thematik des Rauschverhaltens von Schaltungen sind sehr informativ und nützlich.Deshalb würde ich dieses Buch als Grundlagenwerk für jeden Schaltungsentwickler sehen. Auch im Zeitalter der Digital Technik wird es immer Schnittstellen zur analogen "Welt" geben.Die englische Sprache ist hier leicht verständlich und logisch angewendet. Also unbedingte Kaufempfehlung für HIFI Freaks und DIY Experten.

Mr self continues to write in a clear and concise manner and communicates concepts very well. He has to be congratulated on producing a very comprehensive book which will be invaluable to all audio engineers and enthusiasts. Highly recommended
