The Stones of Time: Calendars, Sundials, and Stone Chambers of Ancient Ireland

The Cosmograms
WOW! One of the very best books on the earliest Megalithic structures of Ireland, The hundreds of photos and line drawings of the engraved stones and cosmic architecture are priceless!! I use the illustrations and excellent text to make my own stone carvings and design stone sundials and standing stone circles that mark space and time. He calls the stones "Cosmograms". I agree! They are sun, moon, and star temples and maps of the sky and earth that explore and make explicit the interplay of light and shadow. The author lays out the most excellent argument I've ever read to show that the structures were never used as burial chambers, though the "academics" still ignore his profound logic to this day. Well written and researched with entertaining narrative writing style. You'll love this book and feast on the illustrations..

Fascinating
The book is a fascinating exploration, and explanation, of the Neolithic structures found along the River Boyne in Ireland. These sun and moon dials pre-date the Egyptian pyramids. Who knew? And Knowth and Newground contain an extremely large collection of Neolithic art. Again, who knew? This is an extremely interesting read, especially for those of and with Irish heritage.

The writing on the wall
Originally published as 'The Stars and the Stones' by Thames and Hudson. Brennan's book is part mythology, part art history, and part astronomy and part detective story. This is a truly great read; Brennan takes the reader with him on a quest to unlock the hidden meaning behind some of the oldest man made marks on the planet found among the oldest buildings. Surviving preserved for over 5 thousand years, (predating the pyramids and Stonehenge) the engravings on what archaeologist have called Irish passage tombs point in a very different direction. Brennan weaves his way through ancient myth, astronomy and finally to an interpretation of the art and how that relates to the function of these mounds. In the process he unlocks the code, and reveals that the builders of Newgrange and older Irish megaliths were adept astronomers who recorded their data on the kerb and passage stones of their buildings. He capably demonstrates that these mounds are in fact calindrical devices. Brennan's discoveries (now 30 years old) are still cutting edge. If you are interested in the early intellectual development of man and are tired of hearing about aliens or graves, then here is a solid fascinating book by a pioneer whose conclusions still challenge modern perceptions. Exceptional writing and story telling makes the subject accessible while still giving real depth. A must read.

Hardly any photos of stones
Hardly any photos of the stones just simple line drawings and the photos there are aren't very clear or good quality for these reasons I wouldn't recommend if you want photos/images of the actual stones.

Very interesting and good diagrams
I was surprised that these astrological alignments at Irish sites had remained doubted by archaeologists for so long when the evidence seems to be overwhelming. Grateful to the author for doing the research.

Archaeology/Astronomy
This edition is an improvement on the original issue. However, I still wonder why I cannot recall easily the explanations of the various markings.
