Can this measure in compression just as well as tension?

This load cell only does a good job measuring tension force. For measuring compression, an aluminum beam style load cell is best.

What is the precision/resolution of the tension load cell in newtons? could degraw please provide a datasheet for the load cell?

The exact precision will depend on the setup. In general, you can expect at least +/- 0.15 Newtons of accuracy and often much better depending on the range of force you intend to measure. You can set any decimal resolution you would like in the Arduino code, but anything beyond 0.01 Newtons will likely not be meaningful. There is unfortunately not a datasheet available for this load cell. We are able to keep the cost low by purchasing the load cell from a luggage scale manufacturer who produces the part in-house, but since they do not typically offer it for sale they do not provide a datasheet. I purchased the 40kg load cell and hx711. hx711.h downloaded from gethub fails to compile and i can not get arduino uno to recognize them. help?

In the Arduino PC software click on the "Tools" menu, then select the "Manage Libraries..." item. Type "hx711" in the search box, and select the "HX711 Arduino Library by Bogdan Necula, Andreas Motl", then click the "Install" button.
