I know these are pretty easy to defeat, but they're inexpensive and convenient. I own about a dozen of them, and have NEVER had a problem with them resetting unexpectedly, "auto-locking" or otherwise causing issues as others have described. We keep one on our side-gate of our house, and yes, it needs to be lubricated occasionally to remain smooth, even in mostly-dry Southern California. But the three-number combo is simple and quick for our gardener and pool guy to utilize, and the lock is enough to discourage "opportunity" criminals from easily checking out our backyard. Just use them for an appropriate application. These will totally stymie toddlers, and all but the most undisciplined-but-determined little kids, for example for cabinets of paint/chemicals or ammunition storage. Will be completely ineffective against a patient kid (only 1000 combinations) or clever kid (read on the internet how to pick these), certainly not a teenager. People who hate these locks are simply not using them appropriately.

for the price it works, bought this just for my gym locker and so far no issues, you can change the combination make sure you do that.

I love the ability to adjust the combination on this lock. It's small and solid (mostly) and will keep people out of your stuff at a base level. However, I do have some concerns, which might restrict this items' use case. The last combination lock I used was in high school, nearly two decades ago. The pin used to drop further into the device than this does when it was locked, giving a clear indication that it was locked with that *SNAP* into place. The pin only sinks maybe 1/8th of an inch into the body of the lock, and is held by the mechanism by the other side. While this may be useful for light-duty uses like lockboxes that see no travel, or added security to keep the dog or children out of a box or door, I wouldn't recommend it for heavier use cases, like something that's going to be banged around or tossed. And if thieves are your concern, I'm sure this will easily be snipped by bolt-cutters. Use it for your stash box, school locker, or something else lightweight. Don't use it as a bike, shed, or valuables lock.

The lock broke in 2 months and would not open. I had to cut it off. This is my second lock and the first one had the same issue after about a year. These locks are horrible quality.

Not the highest quality master lock. Could accidentally reset the combo too easily. With that said, it’s easy to set the combo! And it works!

Ideal lock for specific purposes... I've been using these locks for over 20 years. I also have the four number version, but for specific purposes, I like this one better. I have NEVER had one of these locks work loose or not unlock for me. This lock is best when used for low security applications and applications that require "evidence of tampering." I used it mostly for garden sheds, especially those with "wimpy" plastic hasp and easily pried open doors. There is no keys to lose or to look after. Be careful and remember the position of the detent that is used to set the combination. If you accidently depress the shackle in the open position into the detent and move the numbers, you will accidently close the lock on a new unknown combination. If you do this on a four number combination lock, if would be more difficult to retrieve the actual combination. That's why I prefer the three number combination lock for low security applications. The first time it happened to me, I went through the 1,000 or so possible combinations. It took about an hour. Now, I have found that if it locks on an accidently set combination, I just try numbers close to my originally set combination. Retrieving the combination takes 10 minutes or so. I have the original brass body ones. The combination changing detent is located 180 degrees from the locking position of the shackle. On the newer aluminum body version, Master lock has redesigned it to be at the 90 degrees position, realizing that the lock is usually opened to the 180 degrees position and more readily accidently set. Basically, for a specific purpose, I LOVE this lock. They work and last almost forever.

Like that the combination is on the top and not on the side like some others. Easy to see.

I bought this lock because I had a same one before for the gym. That was a way better quality. Way better. This particular one seem to be poorly made. Maybe different seller or batch but it gave me so much trouble. After I programmed it and used it for about a month, once I opened I could not turn it back to normal and lock it. I really thought I will have to buy a new one again. It gave me trouble 3 other times besides that. Once you open it and turn the ear, it can stay like that. You cannot turn it back to the original position to lock. No matter what I did with the numbers or the ear, it did not move. I threw it away. Not buying it again from this seller or from Amazon period.

A great little lock. I have a few of these. Not for high security but great for typical travel scenarios like lockers, locking backpack to luggage rack, etc. For keeping honest people honest and stopping quick opportunity type thefts. It’s quite light because of aluminum body (but steel shackle) and a little bigger than typical luggage locks and so probably a little stronger. I don’t normally give a 5 but I will in this case.

Es un candado pensado para locker de gym o parecido pero me soportó perfectamente el uso en maleta de viaje por avión, no se desgastó ni dejó de funcionar. La calidad del candado es buena y es muy fácil cambiar la combinación. No es la elección más profesional ya que solo tiene tres números de combinación, pero aun así es perfecta opción para un uso de seguridad medio.

I purchased this lock for the gym to keep my stuff safe in the lock while I hit the weights. It does the job very well and I like this it's a combo lock and I don't have to carry a key. This would probably be great for its purpose as a travel lock as well. Enjoy :)
