The Anatomy of Type: A Graphic Guide to 100 Typefaces

A feast for type gourmets
Stephen Coles has selected 100 influential typefaces, and then dissected them to analyse what makes them distinctive. The main part of the book consists of 100 double-page spreads in which he shows a large sample of each typeface, and analyses its features in intimate detail, such as the style of the strokes, the shape of the "g", etc. It also gives a brief history of the typeface, and suggested uses. Although the main choice is of 100 typefaces, the author refers to two or three other related typefaces on each spread, so the number of typefaces mentioned in the book is much larger. If you love type, this beautifully-designed book will provide much to enjoy. On the other hand, if you're one of the many people who can't see why we need more than a dozen typefaces, it will make you appreciate why typefaces look different, and why different typefaces are appropriate for different applications. The result is a perfect combination of a valuable reference resource, and a pleasurable book to dip in to for inspiration.Note that this review is of the American edition of the book. The English version confusingly has a different title, "The Geometry of Type", but identical content, so don't buy both!

Great book. But DONT get The Geometry of Type' as well!!
Great book. wanted it for ages, was finally given it as a gift for my birthday, and also another book called 'The Geometry of Type' as they seemed to be a good pair. They are the exact same book, page for page. with different titles and Amazon even lists this as:"The Anatomy of Type: A Graphic Guide to 100 Typefaces by Stephen Coles"where as "The Geometry of Type: The Anatomy of 100 Essential Typefaces by Erik Spiekermann and Stephen Coles"...BY Erik Spiekerman... and Stephen ColesEven the Cover art is different. So although very similar books, very easy to think of them as different books. they are not. They are the exact same bookBuy one or the other, NOT both!!Great book though.

How to pick a typeface
This book is really great for showing major typefaces and how they vary. I like that the entire alphabet (upper and lower-case), numbers, and some symbols are shown for each face. Then, there are huge examples of letters that show the unique characteristics of each face. I find it very helpful in guiding me with the typefaces I have on my computer. I now know better what I should look for when picking a typeface for a specific purpose.
