acceptable but only that
The content is fine for an entry level college class, however, the book is very biased in some areas. For example, it is rabidly against punishment of any kind and slants the text deliberately to make it seem as if punishment is completely ineffective in all cases while heavily lauding positive and negative reinforcement. Another example of the authors inserting their opinion as established fact is the way that they use the Bandura experiment to "prove" that violence on television and in the media makes people behave violently and patently ignores the problems with that experiment as well as the opposing experiments and theories. The book also slants toward feminism just short of the man bashing point. It dwells on some topic too much, for example eating disorders and classic and operant conditioning, while reducing equally important concepts such as bipolar disorder and media addiction to honorable mentions. It also spends on of the longest chapters in the book detailing the anatomy of each of the major sense organs, eye, ear, nose, skin, and of course the brain in a detail level that belongs in anatomy, not psychology. That could have been summarized and there would have been more room to expound on more relevant issues. In addition, there is really no need to waste valuable time going over theories and techniques that have been discredited. You really do not need to devote more than an illustration under a photo to phrenology or trephining. Overall, this textbook is acceptable but given the going price of a college psychology course, I expected more.
