This DAC itself is pretty solid. But how I got here is NOT fun. I purchased this to replace my SoundBlaster X4 which stopped working after a firmware update, I had it less than 2 years (this is my 2nd X4 from them). Creative themselves have close to the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. My major indictment against them, is when a Firmware update put out by your company breaks your device, you are responsible for the device, no matter what warranty may have elapsed. They were beyond unhelpful, and wasted my time. Whether the time wasting was intentional or not, that is unknown. I REFUSE to ever install a firmware update from Creative Labs ever again. I've been using their products since 1994, and haven't had any real issues in the past. Between the two X4s, G8, Audigy PCIe 7.1, and 3 or 4 other External USB DACs, I've only had the two problems, both with the firmware update bricking the devices. That is pretty unacceptable. Only reason I've stuck around was because they offer a Optical/Toslink out, which is hard to find I/O, but that's their only saving grace for me else I'd kick rocks a long time ago.Only giving 3 stars because I am certain the firmware will stop working and will brick the device one day based on my prior experience. I have been buying creative sound cards since the early 2,000's the Audigy days. This is the first Creative Product I have had problems with. When it works the sound is amazing. It is a powerful little beast and drives my Sennheiser HD 599 Headphones to the max and also my powerful Klipsch 5.1 speaker system including the sub. However it does not work half the time. The sound would cut out and I would have to unplug the USB-C cable and plug it back in for the sound to work, but the sound would cut out again and again and again. I have researched and tried everything possible from uninstalling and re installing the drivers, installed the latest firmware. I made sure to disable my onboard sound, made sure my windows default sound was my SB G8. I even switched the USB and USB-C cables to other sockets but the problem would not go away. This is the same problem I had with the SB X6. I only bought this DAC/AMP SB G8 because my new motherboard on my new computers does not have a PCI-E slot for me to install my trusty old Sound Blaster Z which has been working perfectly since day 1. I am a little annoyed I have to return this G8 because I absolutely love everything about it. But since it doesn't function properly I have no choice but to return it.

Truly a flop in my opinion, there’s A LOT of background hum/noise and the “Scout mode” is very inconsistent with audio delivery. Not very powerful, don’t really get too loud. Overall the sound quality is ok at best.
