Review: Someday - hopefully in the not too distant future - George Berkeley will be recognised for the genius he is. Three hundred years ago, he had insights regarding perception and physical reality which, even today, while supported by science, are considered - to use his words - "repugnant" to the masses. Why? Because most people are unable to see past the deep-rooted assumptions that what they perceive in their minds is identical to what they are perceiving. This Kindle edition of this book is ridiculously cheap, and while versions can be found online for free, the extra Kindle functionality (search, bookmarking, highlighting, dictionary etc.) is a massive plus. The 18th century style of writing, including frequent double negatives and 'archaic' terms, can make for slow reading, but it is a joy to read. Highly recommended. Review: What I love about Berkeley is his presenting the argument that matter does not exist as defense of the common sense of the Clapham Bus passenger. (Edit) In a comment on another review, in which I decried some authors' antisemitism, Petite Fleur pointed out that Berkeley was a slave owner who baptized his slaves and argued that Christianity endorsed slavery. I'm not going to change my rating or opinion of his importance in the history of philosophy, but I'm not going to read him for fun anymore.

Berkeley has always been one of my favorite philosophers. This isn't his complete works, but it's 5 great ones to start with.
