Stanley Kubrick's The Shining Hardcover – 18 Oct. 2024

An outstanding achievement and entirely worthy of the obsessiveness and detail-driven film director Stanley Kubrick. This vast tome on the production of Mr Kubrick's The Shining delves into granular detail regarding the different stages of said production. For those who couldn't afford the £1,000+ initial release of this book, the £100 version is the only other option, but well worth it if you are a Kubrick obsessive like myself. Less open to scholarly analysis of the finished film, which it seems Kubrick himself was not keen on, this is very much a nuts & bolts breakdown of who did what and when. It's very sad that co-author Rinzler died before this hit the printing press, but it shows the same rigour and unearthing of details as his previous Making of Star Wars books. It also offers a fair variety of views from those who actually collaborated with the director, which doesn't entirely demystify, but also avoids the tendency to deify such an iconic figure. Entirely recommended.

Worth every penny if like me, the film left an indelible mark and feel haunted by the film. This book answers so many questions and is just beautiful. I’m glad Taschen released a trade version. The 2K one was unfairly priced for most people.
